Peptides and muscle growth

No peptide on this page has trial evidence that it builds both muscle and strength in healthy people.351 Even growth hormone itself added about 2 kg of lean mass in trials of fit young adults, partly as body water, without clear strength gains.118 The growth hormone releasers were mostly tested for hormone levels, not muscle.2 This page maps what published sources report on each compound and makes no promise.

Growth hormone: the reference point

HGH

The growth hormone releasers on this page act by raising the body's own growth hormone (GH), so GH itself is the benchmark.2 In a systematic review of 27 study groups of fit young adults (303 given GH), lean body mass rose 2.1 kg.1 Strength and exercise capacity did not appear to improve, and swelling and fatigue were more common.1 In a randomized trial of 96 recreational athletes, 8 weeks of GH added lean mass mostly as body water.18 Sprint capacity rose 3.9%, a gain gone 6 weeks after stopping, while strength, power and endurance did not change.18 In older men, strength did not rise significantly, apart from a borderline gain with GH plus testosterone.19 Profile: What is HGH?. Research vial: HGH for sale.

Growth hormone releasers

Sermorelin

In 11 healthy older men, nightly sermorelin injections for 6 weeks improved 2 of 6 strength tests and one endurance test.20 DEXA scans showed no change in muscle or fat.2021 In 19 adults aged 55 to 71, a related analog (not sermorelin itself) raised lean body mass over 16 weeks in the men only.22 A 2026 review calls the benefits in healthy people uncertain because the human evidence is limited and largely indirect.23 The sermorelin and muscle page covers these studies in full. Profile: What is Sermorelin?. Research vial: Sermorelin for sale.

Tesamorelin

Tesamorelin is FDA approved only to reduce excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV and lipodystrophy.24 In its two main trials, lean body mass rose 1.3 kg and 1.2 kg from baseline over 26 weeks.10 It fell 1.8 kg and 1.7 kg in patients then switched to placebo.1011 A secondary analysis found larger, denser skeletal muscle in patients whose deep belly fat fell on treatment.25 Profile: What is Tesamorelin?. Research vial: Tesamorelin for sale.

CJC-1295

No human study of any form of CJC-1295 has measured muscle: FDA notes that its three human studies, all in healthy adults, did not measure body composition.26 In one, a single injection raised average GH 2- to 10-fold for 6 days or more, and IGF-1 1.5- to 3-fold for 9 to 11 days.27 The only lean mass data come from GHRH-knockout mice, where lean mass was normal after treatment.28 The form without DAC has no controlled human studies at all.2 Read What is CJC-1295 with DAC? and What is CJC-1295 No DAC?, or see CJC-1295 with DAC for sale and CJC-1295 No DAC for sale.

Ipamorelin

Ipamorelin's two published clinical trials studied its blood levels and gut recovery after surgery, not muscle.292 In female rats given a steroid for 3 months, adding ipamorelin preserved calf muscle strength, and in prednisolone-treated rats it reduced nitrogen wasting.3031 Paired with CJC-1295, it improved muscle force in mice with steroid-induced muscle loss.3 Read What is Ipamorelin? and What is CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin?, or see Ipamorelin for sale and CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin for sale.

GHRP-2

Human studies of GHRP-2 measured hormones and appetite, not muscle size or strength.232 In 17 older adults, a 30-day infusion kept GH and IGF-1 raised, with no muscle outcome reported in the abstract.32 In steroid-treated rats and in muscle cells, it lowered genes that drive muscle breakdown.33 Profile: What is GHRP-2?. Research vial: GHRP-2 for sale.

GHRP-6

Human studies of GHRP-6 measured short-term hormone changes, such as IGF-1 rising from 252 to 312 micrograms per liter during a 34-hour infusion in 9 men.34 A 2026 review notes a consistent rise in appetite and says direct evidence for body composition changes remains limited.35 Profile: What is GHRP-6?. Research vial: GHRP-6 for sale.

IGF-1 LR3

IGF-1 LR3 has never been tested in a registered human trial.4 In growing female rats it raised weight gain and nitrogen retention, while muscle protein synthesis rose only slightly.56 Trials of natural IGF-1 in 16 older women and 56 athletes found no lean mass gain.78 Profile: What is IGF-1?. Research vial: IGF-1 for sale.

MGF

In human muscle cell cultures, the MGF E peptide extended the growth of muscle stem cells from younger donors and increased their fusion.36 Scientists at two drug companies, however, found no effect on human or mouse muscle cells, and a related rodent E-peptide made mouse muscles bigger but weaker.3738 No human study has tested MGF for muscle.39 Profile: What is MGF?. Research vial: MGF for sale.

AOD-9604 and HGH Fragment 176-191

Both are fragments from the end of the growth hormone molecule.40 In sponsor trials of 893 mostly obese adults, AOD-9604 did not raise IGF-1,40 and in cell tests it did not bind the growth hormone receptor.41 No study measuring muscle with either fragment was found.42 Read What is AOD-9604? and What is HGH Fragment 176-191?, or see AOD-9604 for sale and HGH Fragment 176-191 for sale.

Healing peptides listed under muscle growth

BPC-157

BPC-157 has not been shown to build muscle.43 Its rat muscle study tested healing of a cut quadriceps over 72 days, not growth.44 The three human studies, in 30 people in total, covered knee pain, bladder pain and IV safety, and none measured muscle size or strength.43 A trial of BPC-157 for acute hamstring strain was registered and recruiting in 2026, with no results yet.45 Profile: What is BPC-157?. Research vial: BPC-157 for sale.

TB-500

Muscle growth is a marketing claim for TB-500, not a study finding.46 FDA lists "increasing muscle growth and muscle tone" among the uses it is marketed for online, and found no article in which TB-500 was given to people.46 Profile: What is TB-500?. Research vial: TB-500 for sale.

Wolverine Stack

This blend pairs BPC-157 with TB-500, and its research concerns healing of injured tissue, mostly in animals.47 In a 2026 rat tendon study, the two together gave no added benefit over either alone.48 The healing and recovery page covers that research. Profile: What is Wolverine Stack (BPC-157 + TB-500)?. Research vial: Wolverine Stack (BPC-157 + TB-500) for sale.

GHK-Cu

In mice exposed to cigarette smoke, GHK-Cu treatment reduced muscle loss and improved grip strength.49 A 2026 review of injectable peptides found no clinical data supporting GHK-Cu for musculoskeletal conditions.50 Profile: What is GHK-Cu?. Research vial: GHK-Cu for sale.

Mitochondrial and metabolic compounds

MOTS-c

In mice, MOTS-c injections improved treadmill performance and protected against muscle wasting.5152 In people, exercise raised the body's own MOTS-c in muscle and blood in one small study,53 but another found only a trend in blood and no change in muscle.54 FDA found no clinical studies or human exposure data for MOTS-c given as a drug.55 Profile: What is MOTS-c?. Research vial: MOTS-c for sale.

SS-31

As elamipretide (FORZINITY), SS-31 has accelerated FDA approval to improve muscle strength in patients with Barth syndrome, a rare genetic disease, who weigh at least 30 kg.5658 Strength gains were not seen in the randomized trial, only in its open-label extension, and continued approval may depend on a confirmatory trial.57 In 218 adults with primary mitochondrial myopathy, it did not improve walking distance or fatigue.59 Profile: What is SS-31?. Research vial: SS-31 for sale.

NAD+

In 80 healthy middle-aged adults, oral NMN, an NAD+ precursor, increased six-minute walk distance more than placebo over 60 days, in an industry-funded trial.6061 In human trials of another precursor, nicotinamide riboside, muscle mitochondrial function did not change.62 Profile: What is NAD+?. Research vial: NAD+ for sale.

Semaglutide, tirzepatide and retatrutide

These GLP-1 drugs do not build muscle.6364 The Wegovy and Zepbound labels state that semaglutide and tirzepatide lower body weight with greater fat loss than lean mass loss, so some lean mass is lost too.6364 In a phase 2 substudy of retatrutide in adults with type 2 diabetes, fat mass fell by up to 26.1%.65 The share of weight lost as lean mass was similar to other obesity treatments.65 Read What is Semaglutide?, What is Tirzepatide? and What is Retatrutide?.

Compounds with no muscle data

  • DSIP. In 8 healthy women it did not change growth hormone or prolactin secretion.66 Read What is DSIP?.
  • HCG. No study reviewed for this site shows that hCG builds muscle, and WADA bans it in male athletes at all times.1567 Read What is HCG?.
  • Thymosin Alpha-1. FDA found a lack of evidence for the uses it evaluated, and no study reviewed for this site measured muscle or strength.68 Read What is Thymosin Alpha-1?.
  • KPV. FDA notes KPV is promoted in compounded combinations for muscle and joint repair, but it found no human data for KPV by any route.69 Read What is KPV?.
  • Glow and KLOW blends. No published human study links either blend or its ingredients to muscle growth. Human BPC-157 studies covered knee pain, bladder pain and IV safety, FDA found no human TB-500 or KPV studies, and no clinical data support GHK-Cu for musculoskeletal use.43466950 Read What is Glow Peptide Stack? and What is KLOW Peptide Blend?.

Anti-doping status

The 2026 WADA Prohibited List bans most of the compounds on this page at all times, in and out of competition.14 Its peptide hormone class covers GHRH analogs (including CJC-1295, sermorelin and tesamorelin), secretagogues such as ipamorelin, and GHRP-1 to GHRP-6.14 It also covers GH fragments including AOD-9604 and hGH 176-191, IGF-1 analogues, mechano growth factors and TB-500, and it names BPC-157 among unapproved substances.14 GLP-1 drugs are not on the list.17

How to read this research

A muscle claim needs people, not just hormone levels or animals, and it needs more strength as well as more lean mass. GH shows why both matter: lean mass rose about 2 kg in fit young adults, partly as water, while strength did not clearly improve.118 Hormone levels are not outcomes either. CJC-1295 and the GHRPs raise GH and IGF-1, but no controlled trial has followed that through to muscle.2 Animal models need care too: steroid-treated rats and smoke-exposed mice test protection against wasting, and a cut-muscle study tests healing.304944 A 2026 review of peptide supplements in sports medicine found that 67% of publications used animal models, and that human studies mostly lacked robust controls.70 The profile pages linked above give each compound's side effects and regulatory status, and the safety basics guide covers how to weigh compounds that are not approved.

Frequently asked questions

Can CJC-1295 and Ipamorelin help with muscle growth?

That has not been shown in people. A 2026 review calls controlled evidence for the pair limited,2 and the human studies of each peptide measured growth hormone, IGF-1 or gut recovery after surgery, not muscle.26292 The combination improved muscle force only in mice with steroid-induced muscle loss.3 Even growth hormone itself, which these peptides release, added about 2 kg of lean mass in fit young adults without clear strength gains.1

Does IGF-1 LR3 increase muscle?

No registered human trial has tested it: a ClinicalTrials.gov search for IGF-1 LR3 and its other names returns no studies.4 Over 14 days in growing female rats it increased weight gain and nitrogen retention, while muscle protein synthesis rose only slightly.56 Trials of recombinant human IGF-1, a different form, found no lean mass gain in 16 older women over a year or in 56 athletes over 28 days.78

What are the results of using tesamorelin in bodybuilding?

None of the 24 registered tesamorelin studies tests muscle gain in bodybuilders or healthy athletes.9 Its results come from adults with HIV, where lean body mass rose 1.2 to 1.3 kg from baseline over 26 weeks and fell again in those switched to placebo.1011 A 2026 review notes it has no approval for physique or performance uses,12 and the WADA list bans it in and out of competition.13

Are muscle growth peptides banned in sport?

Most are.14 WADA's 2026 list bans growth hormone releasers, growth hormone fragments and IGF-1 analogues at all times.14 Chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is banned in male athletes as a testosterone-stimulating peptide.15 USADA reports that the 2027 list also names peptides in general as prohibited.16 GLP-1 drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are not on the list, and WADA kept that status for 2027.17
