This vial holds MGF (mechano growth factor), the name for a synthetic peptide that copies the last 24 amino acids of the tail, or E domain, of IGF-1Ec, one form of the IGF-1 precursor.5721 The listing gives 2 mg per vial but does not state which MGF version it is or its purity.5 MGF is not an approved drug.4 Published studies of the synthetic peptide are preclinical.146

Questions about MGF

About MGF

MGF is a name given to IGF-1Ec, a version of the IGF-1 precursor made by alternative splicing; in rabbit muscle, stretch raised its mRNA within 4 days.218 Cutting any IGF-1 precursor releases the hormone itself plus a short tail, the E-peptide, and the synthetic peptide called MGF copies the last 24 amino acids of the IGF-1Ec tail.177 A 2010 review noted that no such peptide had been found in or isolated from cells, animal tissues or body fluids.7

Results for the synthetic peptide conflict. A 2002 cell study reported that the MGF E domain made myoblasts (muscle precursor cells) multiply, while a 2014 replication at two drug companies found no effect.1920 This page lists MGF as a 2 mg research vial, with its stock status shown in the selector above. Researchers who buy MGF peptide for a study should first read What is MGF? for the full evidence and its limits.

Research highlights

  • Exercise (people, observational): heavy knee-extension exercise raised MGF mRNA 2.5 hours later in 8 young adults but not in 7 older adults. This measured the body's own MGF, not the synthetic peptide.3
  • Muscle stem cells (human cells, 2011): the MGF E peptide extended the dividing life span of satellite cells from newborn and young adult donors, but not from old adult donors.2
  • Replication (mouse and human cells, 2014): at up to 500 ng/ml, MGF peptide did not increase proliferation of mouse or human muscle cells.20
  • Receptor (lab assay, 2016): the short MGF peptide and a stabilized analog did not activate the IGF-1 receptor, while a full-length MGF protein did.21
  • Heart (sheep, 2008): after an induced heart attack, the MGF E domain preserved heart function, with 35% less compromised heart muscle than in controls.22
  • Bone (27 rabbits, 2011): 5 days of injections after surgery improved healing of a 5 mm bone defect at the higher of two doses.23
  • Size versus strength (mice, 2014): sustained viral expression of the rodent EB peptide made muscles larger but weaker.24

Regulatory status

MGF is not an approved drug; a 2012 doping-lab paper described it as unapproved for therapeutic use yet readily available on the black market.4 On FDA's list of bulk substances nominated for 503A compounding (updated May 14, 2026), MGF sits in Category 3, nominated without adequate support.16 Its pegylated form, PEG-MGF, is a different product: FDA says compounded PEG-MGF may pose a significant risk of immune reactions for certain routes, and that it has not identified any human exposure data for it.25 WADA names mechano growth factors under class S2.3, prohibited at all times, on both the 2026 and 2027 lists.2627

Handling and storage

Peptide makers advise against storing peptides in solution, because they slowly break down even when sterile.12 If a solution must be kept, they suggest splitting it into single-use portions, freezing them at -20 °C and avoiding repeated freeze-thaw cycles.11 MGF contains two asparagines and two glutamines, amino acids that peptide makers link to a limited shelf life in solution.115

The reconstitution guide covers diluent choice and sterile technique, and the reconstitution calculator does the concentration math for a chosen volume of bacteriostatic water.

Frequently asked questions

Where does MGF ship from?

Orders leave from the USA and Canada for addresses across the United States. Where the 2 mg vial has more than one shipping origin, the selector above names each origin and whether it is in stock, so you can see whether either can fill an order. The shipping page explains origins and lists timing and charges once they are confirmed.

Is there a certificate of analysis for MGF?

Lot documents appear on the lab results page when they are published. The listing does not state which MGF version the vial holds, its salt form or its purity.5 Doping labs have found black-market or confiscated MGF products holding a C-terminal amidated analog, an R23H variant or a larger full-length MGF protein, and told them apart by mass spectrometry, so a lot certificate with a mass result is what shows which version a vial holds.41314

How should MGF be stored when it arrives?

Peptide makers ship dry peptides at room temperature and store them long term in a freezer.1211 MGF's sequence holds four lysines, three arginines and two glutamates, amino acids that peptide makers flag for pulling moisture from the air, so keep the vial tightly capped, dry and cold.111 Let it reach room temperature before opening.15

What supplies are used with an MGF vial?

Mixing a vial takes a diluent such as bacteriostatic water, plus insulin syringes for measuring small volumes and alcohol swabs for aseptic technique. To find the strength of the finished solution, enter the vial amount and the diluent volume in the reconstitution calculator. All of this describes bench work, not use in people.

Is MGF approved for human use?

No. MGF has not been approved for therapeutic use in any source reviewed, and published studies of the synthetic peptide are preclinical.4146 FDA lists it in Category 3 of its compounding nominations, meaning it was nominated without adequate support.16 Each vial is sold for laboratory research and labeled: For research use only. Not for human or veterinary use.
