MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide coded by a short stretch of mitochondrial DNA, one of the mitochondrial-derived peptides, and was first described in 2015.1 Research supplies are synthetic copies of it.1 This vial holds 10 mg of MOTS-c as a freeze-dried (lyophilized) powder, sold for research use only; the listing does not say whether it is the free base or the acetate salt. MOTS-c is not an FDA-approved drug.1

Questions about MOTS-c

About MOTS-c

The MOTS-c for sale on this page is a synthetic copy of a peptide the body makes on its own.1 It is 16 amino acids long and is coded by a short open reading frame in the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene, which places it among the mitochondrial-derived peptides.1 Lee and colleagues first described it in 2015.1

Most of what is known comes from mice, rats and cells.1 In mice its main target appears to be skeletal muscle.5 In cell studies it slowed the folate cycle and the purine production tied to it, which switched on AMPK, an enzyme that senses cell energy.5 FDA reviewers wrote in May 2026 that its molecular targets are still unknown, and they found no clinical studies or human exposure data by any route.1

It sits in two of the store's peptide categories, Anti-Aging Peptides and Weight Loss Peptides. Those labels reflect research topics, not proven effects in people.1 The uses named in the nomination FDA reviewed were insulin resistance, obesity, osteoporosis, vascular calcification, muscle and fat metabolism, and longevity.1 The MOTS-c price shown on this page is for one 10 mg vial. What is MOTS-c? covers the science in more depth.

Research highlights

  • In male mice on a high-fat diet, 8 weeks of daily injections left them about 20% lighter than control mice, with less fat in the liver (animal study).15
  • MOTS-c did not change body weight in mice on a normal diet, and eating less did not explain the high-fat-diet result (animal study).5
  • Mice on a high-fat diet treated for 7 days needed about 30% more infused glucose to keep blood sugar steady under insulin, a sign of better insulin sensitivity (animal study).51
  • Short-term treatment improved treadmill performance in mice aged 2, 12 and 22 months (animal study).61
  • Old male mice given MOTS-c three times a week from 23.5 months of age gained physical capacity,16 but the lifespan trend was not statistically significant (P = 0.23) (animal study).6
  • In 10 young men, one cycling session raised the body's own MOTS-c about 11.9-fold in muscle; in a 30-person study, blood levels only trended up after endurance exercise and muscle levels did not change (human observational).67

Regulatory status

Before you buy MOTS-c online, check where it stands with US regulators. It is not an FDA-approved drug and is not part of any approved drug.1 In a May 11, 2026 memo, FDA reviewers proposed not adding it to the 503A bulks list, which names the substances compounding pharmacies may use, citing poor characterization and no human safety data.1 On July 23, 2026, FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted 7 to 5, with 2 abstentions, to recommend adding it.8 That vote is not binding: FDA must propose a rule and take public comment first.9 As of October 14, 2026, a law firm reported that FDA had not said whether it will start that process.10

In sport, MOTS-c is prohibited at all times under section 4.4.1 (activators of the enzyme AMPK) of the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List, which names it explicitly.11 This vial is sold for research use only, as set out in the research use policy.

Handling and storage

If you buy MOTS-c for reconstitution work, you will need a diluent such as bacteriostatic water, which is listed separately. FDA notes that MOTS-c is reported to dissolve in water, but that no public solubility data show it dissolves completely in a final solution.1 Peptides are also sensitive to pH, heat, concentration and impurities, which can cause clumping and breakdown.1

Follow the reconstitution guide for the lab steps, and use the reconstitution calculator for concentration math.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy MOTS-c peptide?

D2C Peptides lists MOTS-c as a 10 mg vial of freeze-dried powder, sold for research use only under the store's research use policy. Choose a ship-from option in the selector on this page, and see the shipping page for delivery details. MOTS-c is not an FDA-approved drug and is not part of any approved medicine.1

How should I store MOTS-c when it arrives?

Supplier data cited in FDA's 2026 review say freeze-dried MOTS-c free base is stable at -20°C when kept dry, away from light and tightly closed.1 Once reconstituted, the same data give +4°C for 2 to 7 days, or below -18°C for later use.1 See how to store peptides for general practice.

Does MOTS-c come with a certificate of analysis?

Check the lab results page for certificates of analysis. On any MOTS-c certificate, check which salt form it names, because FDA's 2026 review treats MOTS-c free base and MOTS-c acetate as different ingredients.1 FDA notes that inconsistent naming can mean receiving a different substance than intended,1 and an example free-base certificate FDA found listed only a purity result, with no impurity limits.1 This listing does not state the salt form of the vial.

What supplies are used with a MOTS-c vial?

The vial holds powder only, so diluent and handling supplies are separate items. The supplies listed with this product are bacteriostatic water, a 3 mL Luer-Lok syringe, an 18G 1-inch needle, insulin syringes and alcohol swabs. Each supply page lists its own specifications and storage.
