Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide, a chain of five amino acids that includes two unnatural ones, Aib and D-2-naphthylalanine.234 A growth hormone secretagogue, it activates ghrelin receptors and triggers growth hormone release from the pituitary.34 Novo Nordisk researchers first made it in the mid-1990s and described it in 1998.34 The vial holds 10 mg of freeze-dried powder for laboratory research, and no FDA-approved drug contains ipamorelin.4

Questions about Ipamorelin

About Ipamorelin

Ipamorelin acts at the receptor for ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite.410 According to FDA's 2024 review, it works mainly through ghrelin receptors on hypothalamic nerve cells that make GHRH, and also on growth hormone-producing pituitary cells.4 That is a different route from CJC-1295 No DAC, which mimics GHRH itself.4 Its 1998 discovery paper called it the first selective growth hormone secretagogue.3

Human studies gave it by IV infusion, apart from one nasal dose in a single volunteer.7817 FDA's 2024 review found effectiveness data only for IV use after bowel surgery, where a phase 2 trial found no significant benefit.48 This page lists ipamorelin for sale as a 10 mg research vial. What is Ipamorelin? covers the side effect data, published study doses and regulatory record.

Research highlights

  • Rat pituitary cells (1998): growth hormone release with potency close to GHRP-6 (EC50 about 1.3 versus 2.2 nmol/L) and a maximal effect of 85% versus 100%.3
  • Conscious swine (1998): GHRP-6 and GHRP-2 raised ACTH and cortisol, but ipamorelin stayed at GHRH levels even at more than 200 times its half-maximal growth hormone dose.3
  • Healthy men (1999, eight at each of five doses): a 15-minute IV infusion caused one growth hormone pulse that peaked at 0.67 hours, and the drug's terminal half-life was about 2 hours.7
  • Bowel surgery, 114 adults (phase 2, 2014): IV ipamorelin twice daily for up to 7 days did not significantly shorten the time to the first tolerated solid meal, a median 25.3 versus 32.6 hours on placebo (p = 0.15).8
  • Rats after abdominal surgery (2009): one IV dose shortened the time to the first bowel movement, and repeated doses raised stool output, food intake and weight gain.10
  • Adult female rats (1999): injections under the skin three times daily for 15 days sped bone lengthening from 42 to as much as 52 micrometers per day, without changing total IGF-I.11
  • Mice (2001): twice-daily injections raised body weight about 15% in 2 weeks and increased body fat, even in growth hormone-deficient mice.12

Regulatory status

No FDA-approved drug contains ipamorelin, and it has no USP or National Formulary monograph.4 Since September 29, 2023, FDA has placed ipamorelin acetate in Category 2 for outsourcing facilities (may present significant safety risks), citing possible immune reactions and serious adverse events, including death, in a published IV study.13 On October 29, 2024, FDA's compounding advisers voted 12 to 0, with 1 abstention, against adding each form of ipamorelin to the 503A bulks list.14

FDA warning letters dated August 24, 2026 to two online sellers called research-labeled tesamorelin and ipamorelin blends unapproved new drugs, because the sellers' websites showed they were meant for people.1516 WADA's 2026 list bans it at all times as a growth hormone secretagogue under S2.2.4.19 In an anti-doping study of one volunteer, a urine metabolite outlasted the parent drug.17

Handling and storage

FDA warns that peptides like ipamorelin can be very sensitive to formulation, processing and conditions such as pH, heat and concentration, which can make them clump (aggregate) or break down and lose activity.4 Water solubility depends on the salt form: sources cited by FDA give 5 mg/mL for ipamorelin acetate and 0.0032 mg/mL for the free base.4 At 5 mg/mL, 10 mg of the acetate needs at least 2 mL of water to dissolve fully.

The steps are in How to reconstitute a peptide vial, the reconstitution calculator does the concentration math, and How to store peptides covers storage before and after mixing.

Frequently asked questions

What strength of ipamorelin is listed?

The listed strength is 10 mg of powder per vial, with the price and stock for each shipping origin in the selector. Ipamorelin is also in the CJC-1295 + Ipamorelin blend vial, so check the label name. The listing does not say whether the powder is the free base or the acetate salt, which FDA's review lists with different CAS numbers and water solubility.4

Where does ipamorelin ship from?

Orders ship from the USA and Canada to addresses across the United States. When a strength is stocked at more than one origin, the selector names each origin with its own stock status, so the choice is made before checkout. Delivery details are on the shipping page, and return rules are on Returns and refunds.

Is there a certificate of analysis for ipamorelin?

Any certificates of analysis D2C Peptides can share are posted on the lab results page. Look past the purity figure: in FDA's 2024 review, the free-base nominations came with no certificate, and the one acetate certificate showed no results for impurities, aggregates, bioburden or endotoxin.4 An identity result should fit 711.9 g/mol for the free base.1 Powders seized by Danish customs held glycine-modified analogs of ipamorelin rather than the original compound.18

What supplies are used with an ipamorelin vial?

Diluent and bench supplies are separate catalog items: bacteriostatic water as a diluent, insulin syringes, a 3 mL Luer-Lok syringe, an 18G 1-inch needle and alcohol swabs for vial stoppers. They are lab handling items; nothing here is a direction for use in people.

Is ipamorelin for human use?

No. It is sold for laboratory research, and each vial carries this label: For research use only. Not for human or veterinary use. No FDA-approved drug contains ipamorelin.4 Its clinical trials gave it by IV, in research or hospital settings, for at most 7 to 10 days, and FDA found no safety data for the under-the-skin route.489
