A 3 mL syringe with a Luer-Lok tip, a threaded fitting that a separate needle screws onto and locks.2 Its barrel is read by volume, and 3 mL is the same as 3 cc.16 The listing does not say whether a needle is included; our 18G, 23G and 25G needles are sold separately.

What it is

A piston syringe is a calibrated barrel with a movable plunger and, at one end, a male nozzle that fits the hub of a hypodermic needle. US rules class it as a Class II medical device.1 Luer connectors join a male and a female part in a secure but detachable, leak-proof seal, either by pushing on (Luer slip) or by screwing onto a thread (Luer lock).2

Luer-Lok is BD's name for its locking tip. BD sells 3 mL syringes with either tip for general use: catalog 309657 has a Luer-Lok tip and 309656 a Luer slip tip.34 FDA's device database lists one BD 3 mL Luer-Lok model, 309585, as a sterile, single-use, prescription-use device.5 The supplier does not name the maker of the syringe sold here.

How it is used

It holds three times the volume of our 1 mL insulin syringes and is read in mL, while insulin syringes are marked in units.17 Keep the scales straight: FDA has said that mixing up milliliters, milligrams and units may have played a part in dosing errors with compounded semaglutide drawn from vials.8 The reconstitution calculator and the units converter do the conversions, and the reconstitution guide covers the lab steps.

Before a needle passes through a vial's rubber stopper, CDC's Pink Book suggests wiping the stopper with friction and a sterile alcohol swab; the alcohol dries while the needle is readied.10 CDC also says never to leave a needle sitting in a vial's septum for repeated use.11 FDA has been evaluating plastic syringes made in China for possible failures since November 2023. Its August 2024 update advises checking the labeling or packaging for where a syringe was made, using syringes not made in China if possible, and, for anyone with only those, watching closely for leaks and breakage.9

Storage and disposal

MedlinePlus says to throw away, in a sharps container, any syringe whose wrapping or cap is broken or missing.12 After use, the syringe and needle go straight into a sharps disposal container.13 FDA says never to take a needle off a syringe by hand, and to recap one only with a mechanical device or a one-handed method.14 The injection guide covers sharps disposal in full, and the storage guide covers mixed vials.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 3 mL Luer-Lok syringe come with a needle?

Not always. BD, for example, sells its 3 mL Luer-Lok syringe as a 'syringe only' item (catalog 309657).3 Our listing does not say whether a needle is included, so plan on a separate needle. Under US rules a syringe nozzle fits the hub of a hypodermic needle,1 and the 18G, 23G and 25G needles are listed on their own.

Is a 3 mL syringe the same as a 3cc syringe?

Yes. MedlinePlus notes that 1 cc is the same amount as 1 mL, so a 3 mL syringe and a 3 cc syringe hold the same volume, and labels may use either unit.6 Insulin syringes are the exception to volume marks: their barrels show insulin units, 100 to each mL on a U-100 syringe.7

Where does the 3 mL syringe ship from?

This syringe is listed with more than one ship-from origin, and you pick one when you add it to the cart. Orders ship to addresses across the United States. The shipping page explains how to choose an origin and what is confirmed about timing and charges, and each of our other supplies lists its own origin on its page.
