This vial is sold as HMG 75 IU, a freeze-dried powder for laboratory research. HMG (menotropins) is a mixture of gonadotropin hormones extracted from the urine of postmenopausal women and then purified.12 Its follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) activity is measured in international units, and hCG is also present.13 The licensed US product, Menopur, is a prescription biologic.4

Questions about HMG

About HMG

HMG, also called menotropins, is extracted from the urine of postmenopausal women and further purified, and hCG from the urine of pregnant women may be added to balance its LH activity.12 The FSH activity drives the recruitment and growth of ovarian follicles, while the LH activity supports the ovary's steroid hormone production.2 In fertility care it is given daily for 7 to 20 days to grow follicles, and hCG must then be given to induce ovulation.1

This page lists HMG for sale as a 75 IU research vial in the reproductive health peptides range; it is not Menopur. The HMG price and the stock for each shipping origin are in the selector above. When you buy HMG online here, you receive the freeze-dried powder only; diluent and lab supplies are sold separately.

Most of the research comes from women having IVF, with smaller studies in men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.1011 Side effects, label dosing and the full evidence review are on What is HMG?.

Research highlights

  • IVF, phase 3 trial 0399E (727 women): continuing pregnancy was 23.3% with Menopur versus 20.6% with recombinant FSH, meeting the non-inferiority goal, and peak estradiol ran higher.2
  • IVF, MERiT randomized trial (2006, 731 women): ongoing pregnancy was 27% with highly purified hMG versus 22% with recombinant FSH; non-inferiority was shown, superiority was not.12
  • IVF, MEGASET randomized trial (2012, 749 women): cumulative live birth from one stimulation cycle was 40% with highly purified hMG versus 38% with recombinant FSH.13
  • IVF, Cochrane review (2026, 59 studies, 18,119 women): live birth was probably lower and OHSS probably higher with recombinant FSH than with HMG, on moderate-certainty evidence.10
  • Anovulation, randomized trial (2006, 184 women): ovulation rates were 85.7% with highly purified hMG and 85.5% with recombinant FSH, with fewer intermediate-sized follicles on hMG.14
  • Men, meta-analysis (2014, 44 gonadotropin studies): sperm production in 75% of men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, more often with hCG plus FSH; the abstract reports no result for hMG on its own.15

Regulatory status

In the US, menotropins is licensed as Menopur (Ferring, BLA 021663), approved on October 29, 2004, with marketing status "Prescription".4 Its only US indication is growing multiple follicles for pregnancy in ovulatory women during assisted reproduction, and the label reserves it for physicians experienced in infertility treatment, who set and adjust each dose.1 FDA says biologics are not eligible for the 503A and 503B compounding exemptions, and it named menotropins among four bulk substances affected by the March 23, 2020 biologics transition.916 WADA's 2026 list bans chorionic gonadotrophin and LH in males at all times (S2.2.1).17 Menopur contains LH activity and detectable hCG, but that entry does not name menotropins, so HMG's sport status is not confirmed here.3 Every vial is labeled: For research use only. Not for human or veterinary use.

Handling and storage

Menopur's label says to mix the powder with sterile 0.9% sodium chloride (saline), usually 1 mL, to swirl rather than shake it, and to use the solution at once.1 Its labeled diluent is saline, not bacteriostatic water.1 The reconstitution guide covers sterile lab steps, the reconstitution calculator works out the concentration for any diluent volume, and How to store peptides covers storage.

Frequently asked questions

Where does HMG ship from?

HMG is listed with two shipping origins, the USA and Canada, and the selector above shows the stock status of each one before checkout. Orders ship from the USA and Canada to addresses across the United States. Choose an origin that shows in stock. Delivery details are on the shipping page.

What does 75 IU mean on an HMG vial?

IU means international units, which measure biological activity rather than weight.1 For the licensed product Menopur, FSH activity is measured by ovarian weight gain in female rats and LH activity by seminal vesicle weight gain in male rats, both against WHO international standards, and each vial carries 75 IU of each.14 Because the unit comes from a bioassay, a purity result alone does not confirm it.

How should HMG be stored when it arrives?

Menopur's labels are the nearest published reference. The US label allows the unmixed powder in the refrigerator or at room temperature, 3 to 25 °C (37 to 77 °F), away from light, and Canada's monograph gives 15 to 25 °C.12 Once mixed, Menopur is used immediately and any leftover is discarded.1 These limits come from the licensed product; no stability study of this vial was found.

Is there a certificate of analysis for this HMG?

Lab documents, when published, are collected on the lab results page. For HMG, a purity percentage tells only part of the story. Its strength is a biological activity, so a useful lot record also reports potency in IU, plus sterility and bacterial endotoxin results.1

Is this HMG a prescription medicine?

No. It is a research-labeled vial for laboratory use, not Menopur. Menopur, the FDA-licensed menotropins product, has marketing status "Prescription" and its package is marked "Rx only".43 FDA says biologics are not eligible for the compounding exemptions and that federal law gives no pathway for marketing a biologic made outside an approved license.9 Our research use policy sets the terms for research orders.
