This vial is sold as HCG 5000 IU, a freeze-dried powder labeled for laboratory research. HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a glycoprotein hormone made by the placenta, built from a 92-amino-acid alpha subunit and a 145-amino-acid beta subunit.123 It acts almost exactly like luteinizing hormone (LH).1 Licensed hCG medicines are prescription biologics in the US.45

Questions about HCG

About HCG

Human chorionic gonadotropin is the pregnancy hormone of the placenta: it keeps the corpus luteum making estrogen and progesterone after LH falls.1 Its action is virtually identical to pituitary LH, with a small degree of FSH activity, so it drives Leydig cells in the testes to make androgens and the corpus luteum to make progesterone.1 Licensed brands are purified from the urine of pregnant women (Pregnyl, Novarel) or made in genetically modified hamster ovary cells (Ovidrel).123

The HCG for sale here is none of those brands. It is a 5000 IU research vial in the hormone therapy peptides range, and the HCG price and stock for each origin are in the selector above. When you buy HCG online here, you receive the freeze-dried powder only; diluent and lab supplies are sold separately.

The licensed products' established uses are supervised medical ones: triggering ovulation in fertility care, selected men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, and undescended testes in young boys.1 Side effects, label dosing and the full source list are on What is HCG?.

Research highlights

  • Obesity, meta-analysis (1995, 8 controlled and 16 uncontrolled trials): no scientific evidence that hCG treats obesity, reduces hunger or redistributes fat.13
  • Obesity, double-blind trial (1990, 40 obese women, 6 weeks): hCG injections 6 days a week on the same diet showed no advantage over saline on any measure.14
  • Testicular testosterone, randomized study (2005, 29 healthy men, 3 weeks): testosterone injections cut it by 94%, and adding hCG raised it with dose, to 26% above baseline in the highest-dose group.15
  • Men on testosterone, records review (2013, 26 men, mean 6.2 months): semen measures did not change, no man became azoospermic, and 9 contributed to a pregnancy.16
  • Sperm production, meta-analysis (2014, 44 studies): gonadotropin therapy produced sperm in 75% of men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, more often with hCG plus FSH.17
  • IVF trigger, Cochrane review (2016, 18 trials, 2,952 participants): no evidence of a difference between recombinant and urinary hCG in live birth, ongoing pregnancy or OHSS.18

Regulatory status

In the US, hCG is sold by prescription as Novarel, Pregnyl, a Fresenius Kabi product and the recombinant Ovidrel.5192021 Pregnyl was approved on October 20, 1976, and since March 23, 2020 these products have been licensed biologics, outside the 503A and 503B compounding exemptions.2223 Labeled uses are prepubertal undescended testes, selected men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and ovulation induction, and a prescriber sets the dose for each case.1 No hCG product is approved for weight loss, and FDA has said that all drug products claiming to contain "homeopathic" HCG are illegally marketed.11 WADA bans chorionic gonadotrophin in males at all times (2026 list, S2.2.1), and New York lists it in Schedule III of its controlled substances law.2425 Every vial is labeled: For research use only. Not for human or veterinary use.

Handling and storage

Pregnyl's label says to add 1 to 10 mL of solvent to the powder and agitate gently, without shaking, until it dissolves, and not to use a solution with discoloration or particles.1 Novarel's recommended diluent is bacteriostatic water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a preservative linked to a fatal "gasping syndrome" in premature infants.2 The reconstitution guide covers sterile lab steps, and the reconstitution calculator works out the concentration for any diluent volume.

Frequently asked questions

Where does HCG ship from?

Orders ship from the USA and Canada to addresses across the United States. This vial is listed with a USA origin and a Canada origin, and the selector at the top of the page shows the stock status of each. An origin marked out of stock cannot fill the order. Delivery details are on the shipping page.

How should HCG be stored when it arrives?

Licensed hCG labels are the nearest published reference. Unmixed Pregnyl and Novarel are kept at controlled room temperature.12 Once mixed, Novarel is refrigerated at 2 to 8 °C (36 to 46 °F) and used within 30 days, while mixed Pregnyl not used at once is refrigerated and discarded after 60 days.21 These limits come from licensed products, not from tests of this vial.

What does 5000 IU mean on an HCG vial?

It is the vial's listed strength. Like the licensed products, hCG is counted in units rather than milligrams: Novarel comes in 5,000 or 10,000 USP unit vials, and its mixing table writes the same amounts as IU.2 By that table, 1 mL of bacteriostatic water in a 5,000 unit vial gives 5,000 IU per mL, and 10 mL gives 500 IU per mL.2

Is there a certificate of analysis for this HCG?

When lab documents are published for a lot, they appear on the lab results page. hCG has two protein chains and about 30% of its weight is sugar, so a purity percentage tells only part of the story.37 Look for identity, potency in IU, sterility and bacterial endotoxin results.

Is this HCG a prescription medicine?

No. It is a research-labeled vial for laboratory use, not one of the licensed products. FDA states that hCG is not approved for use without a prescription for any purpose, and that approved hCG products are injections that need a prescription.411 In an August 2026 warning letter to another online peptide seller, FDA said "research use only" labels did not stop the products from being drugs for human use; that letter did not name hCG.12 Order terms are in our research use policy.
