What it is

Federal rules treat this kind of needle, a sharpened metal tube on a hub that fits a syringe, as a Class II medical device.3 This one is 25 gauge and 1 inch long. Needles get thinner as the gauge number rises, so it is the narrowest of the three sizes we list.2 In FDA's device database, BD 305125 appears as a prescription-use, single-use device cleared through premarket notification K021475.4

How our three needles compare:

Needle Width BD hub color BD catalog number Gauge within CDC's vaccine ranges
18G 1-Inch Needle Widest2 Pink5 3051955 Neither: wider than 22 G7
23G x 1 Inch Needle Middle2 Turquoise6 3051456 Intramuscular and subcutaneous7
25G x 1 Inch Needle (this page) Thinnest2 Blue1 3051251 Intramuscular and subcutaneous7

CDC's vaccine tables list 22 to 25 gauge for intramuscular injection and 23 to 25 gauge, 5/8 inch long, for subcutaneous injection, so a 1 inch length matches only the intramuscular rows.7 These tables describe vaccines given by clinicians, not any other product. The supplier names our 18G needle without a brand, so its BD number is a comparable model only.

How it is used

Needles of this kind inject fluids into, or withdraw them from, the tissue below the skin.3 FDA's record for BD 305125 adds that they may also be used to prepare fluids or drugs.4 For vial handling, CDC's Pink Book notes that wiping the stopper with a sterile alcohol swab, using friction, may help assure aseptic technique.7 Our alcohol swabs are listed for that step. The reconstitution guide and the reconstitution calculator cover mixing a vial, and the injection guide covers how prescribed injections are given.

Storage and disposal

Put each used needle in a sharps disposal container right away, and never remove it from the syringe by hand.1011 Needles are not recyclable and never go down the toilet.12 Keep sharps and the container out of reach of children and pets, and do not reuse a sharps container once it is full.1012 Mixed vials are covered in the storage guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 25G needle sterile?

BD sells its PrecisionGlide needles sterile and for single use,1 and FDA's device record for BD 305125 lists it as packaged sterile, needing no sterilization before use.4 The supplier names the needle as a BD PrecisionGlide but does not confirm the exact catalog number.

Can I reuse the needle?

No. FDA's device record lists BD 305125 as a single-use device.4 CDC's rule for safe injection practice is 'One Needle, One Syringe, Only One Time,' and CDC advises against leaving a needle in a vial's septum for repeated use.9 Each used needle goes straight into a sharps disposal container, and the container itself is never reused.10

Is a 25G needle the same as an insulin syringe needle?

No. The needles preattached to U-100 insulin syringes run as fine as 31 gauge and as short as 6 mm.2 A 25G x 1 inch needle is wider, about four times the length of a 6 mm insulin needle, and it is sold on its own to fit a syringe whose nozzle takes a needle hub, such as our 3mL Syringe, Luer-Lok Tip.48
