Melanotan 2 (Melanotan II, MT2) is a lab-made peptide of 7 amino acids closed into a ring, modeled on the hormone alpha-MSH.1 It switches on several melanocortin receptors, and in small trials it darkened skin but also caused erections, nausea and yawning.234 The vial holds 10 mg of white freeze-dried powder.5 MT2 is not FDA approved for any use.6

About Melanotan 2

Melanotan 2 was developed at the University of Arizona as one of a family of long-acting, enzyme-resistant melanocortin analogs. Of the two tested in people, Melanotan 1 is a straight chain and MT2 a shortened ring.15161 MT2's effect on erections was discovered by accident during studies of skin tanning.17 It is a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist: it darkens skin mainly through MC1R on pigment cells, while in rodents its appetite-suppressing effect is thought to run through MC4R.2181924

This page lists Melanotan II for sale as a 10 mg research vial. Research highlights

  • Skin darkening (1996, pilot phase 1 trial, n=3): two of three healthy men had measurably darker skin on the face, upper body and buttock 1 week after a 2-week course of injections under the skin, with MT2 alternating with saline.320
  • Erections (1998, double-blind crossover trial, n=10): 8 of 10 men with psychogenic erectile dysfunction had clinically apparent erections, with tip rigidity above 80% for 38.0 minutes on average on MT2 versus 3.0 on placebo.21
  • Desire and nausea (2000 review of both crossover trials, n=20): increased sexual desire followed 68% of MT2 doses and 19% of placebo doses, and 12.9% of subjects had severe nausea at one dose level.2223
  • Heart rate and blood pressure (2012, mice): systemic MT2 raised both in a dose-dependent way, heart rate more than pressure, and an MC3/MC4 receptor blocker abolished the effect.25
  • Moles (2019 systematic review, 179 published patients): immunosuppressants, chemotherapy or melanotan, counted as one group, were the suspected cause in 41% of sudden-onset mole cases; the data could not assess the risk of malignant change.2627

Regulatory status

FDA has not approved MT2 for any use, and in 2007 it warned a company selling Melanotan II as a tanning agent and skin cancer preventive.613 FDA's compounding safety page (current as of April 2026) lists Melanotan II among substances once in category 2 whose nominators withdrew them, and warns that compounded forms may pose a risk of immune reactions for certain routes, from aggregation or peptide-related impurities.2829 Its Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee is to discuss Melanotan II for the 503A bulks list at a meeting before the end of February 2027.3031 In April 2024 the UK's MHRA said injectable and pen Melanotan II products are medicines, and that UK law does not permit the sale, supply or advertising of unauthorized medicines.3233

Handling and storage

The vial holds MT2 as a white freeze-dried solid with no diluent.512 Peptides often absorb water from the air, so peptide maker Bachem advises warming a cold vial to room temperature in a desiccator before opening it.34 Bachem also notes that peptides containing tryptophan, as MT2 does, have limited shelf lives.357 Mixing steps are in the reconstitution guide, and the reconstitution calculator works out the concentration for a chosen volume of bacteriostatic water.

Is there a certificate of analysis for Melanotan II?

The lab documents we publish are on the lab results page. The supplier's posted certificate for lot 2025-02-13 reports 99.20% purity by HPLC-UV-MS, but it does not state how many milligrams the vial holds.10 That gap matters: a 2015 lab study of MT2 vials that online shops sold as 10 mg found 4.32 to 8.84 mg.11

What supplies go with a Melanotan II vial?

The vial holds powder only; bacteriostatic water is not included.12 The supplies listed with it are bacteriostatic water, a 3 mL Luer-Lok syringe, an 18G 1-inch needle, insulin syringes and alcohol swabs. These are lab handling items, not directions for use in people.

Is Melanotan II for human use?

No. It is sold for laboratory research only and labeled not for human or veterinary use. FDA has not approved MT2 for any use, and in 2007 it advised consumers using a Melanotan II product to stop.6 FDA's compounding safety page notes published case reports of serious harms, including melanoma and priapism.14
