Research goal

Rybelsus and weight loss

Rybelsus is not FDA approved for weight loss; its label covers adults with type 2 diabetes.1 Its diabetes trials, whose main measure was HbA1c, also reported weight: at week 26, the largest average change in any group was -4.4 kg on 14 mg.1 The semaglutide tablet FDA approved for weight reduction is Wegovy.23

What sources report

Weight in the diabetes trials

Rybelsus for weight loss is not a labeled use, but six of its diabetes trials, whose main measure was HbA1c, also report body weight at week 26. All enrolled adults with type 2 diabetes.1

Label trial (week 26) Adults Average change on Rybelsus Average change on comparator
Trial 1, diet and exercise only1 703 -2.3 kg (7 mg), -3.7 kg (14 mg) -1.4 kg (placebo)
Trial 2, with metformin1 822 -3.8 kg (14 mg) -3.7 kg (empagliflozin 25 mg)
Trial 3, with metformin, with or without a sulfonylurea1 1,864 -2.2 kg (7 mg), -3.1 kg (14 mg) -0.6 kg (sitagliptin 100 mg)
Trial 4, against liraglutide injection and placebo1 711 -4.4 kg (14 mg) -3.1 kg (liraglutide 1.8 mg), -0.5 kg (placebo)
Trial 5, moderate kidney impairment1 324 -3.4 kg (14 mg) -0.9 kg (placebo)
Trial 6, with insulin1 731 -2.4 kg (7 mg), -3.7 kg (14 mg) -0.4 kg (placebo)

Two patterns stand out. In each trial that tested both doses, weight fell more on 14 mg than on 7 mg.1 Every Rybelsus group lost more weight on average than the placebo, sitagliptin or liraglutide group in its trial, while the change against empagliflozin was about the same.1 Baseline weight in Trial 1 was about 88 to 89 kg, so the 3.7 kg average loss on 14 mg was roughly 4% of body weight.1

Appetite and fullness

FDA says GLP-1 receptor agonists slow food moving through the digestive tract, which can help a person feel full longer, and that GLP-1 receptors sit in brain areas that regulate appetite.6 On the Rybelsus label, decreased appetite appears as a side effect, not a goal; its rates are on Rybelsus side effects.1

The semaglutide tablet approved for weight reduction

FDA approved Wegovy tablets, oral semaglutide in 1.5, 4, 9 and 25 mg strengths, on December 22, 2025.2 They share the Wegovy injection's weight reduction and cardiovascular uses, but not its MASH or pediatric uses.23 In the Wegovy label's tablet study, in adults with obesity or with overweight and a weight-related condition, 25 mg once daily produced an average weight change of -13.6% at week 64, against -2.4% on placebo.4 Its top strength is 25 mg, while the Rybelsus label stops at 14 mg.21 More on that product: Wegovy and weight loss and the Wegovy profile.

Rybelsus and the weekly Ozempic injection

No trial on the Rybelsus label compared it with the weekly Ozempic injection.1 The Ozempic injection label reports its own 30-week trial in type 2 diabetes, where weight changed -3.8 kg on 0.5 mg and -4.7 kg on 1 mg, against -1.2 kg on placebo.7 The trials differed in length, doses and participants, so their figures cannot be read as a head-to-head result.

What the label says

  • Uses: improving blood sugar control with diet and exercise, and lowering the risk of major cardiovascular events, both in adults with type 2 diabetes. Weight loss is not a labeled use.1
  • Dose steps follow blood sugar, not weight: the label moves from 7 mg to 14 mg only if more blood sugar control is needed.1 The prescriber sets the dose.
  • Gallbladder: gallstones and gallbladder inflammation are listed risks, with symptoms such as upper stomach pain, fever and yellow skin or eyes.1
  • Boxed warning: semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors in mice and rats; whether it does so in people is unknown.1

Limits of the evidence

  • Monthly weight change is not reported on the label; its trials measured weight at 26 weeks.1
  • Every label trial enrolled adults with type 2 diabetes, and the sources reviewed here include no Rybelsus weight trial in people without diabetes.1
  • Population matters. On the Wegovy label, injected semaglutide 2.4 mg produced -15.5% at week 72 in adults with obesity, but -10.4% in adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes.4
  • What happens to weight after Rybelsus is stopped is not covered in the sources reviewed here.

The Rybelsus profile covers the tablet in full, Rybelsus dosage gives the label schedule, and Rybelsus side effects lists what the label reports. Glucose results from the same trials are on Rybelsus and blood sugar. Other compounds people search for this goal are on Peptides and weight loss, including Semaglutide and weight loss.

Frequently asked questions

Does Rybelsus work for weight loss?

Rybelsus is not approved for weight loss; its label covers adults with type 2 diabetes.1 Weight did fall in its diabetes trials. In the trial against liraglutide injection, 14 mg averaged -4.4 kg at 26 weeks, against -3.1 kg on liraglutide and -0.5 kg on placebo.1 For weight reduction itself, FDA approved a different semaglutide tablet, Wegovy, in December 2025.2

How much weight can I lose on Rybelsus in a month?

The label does not report weight by month, and no one's result can be predicted.1 Its trials measured weight at 26 weeks, about 6 months, when average change ranged from -2.2 to -4.4 kg on Rybelsus vs -0.4 to -1.4 kg on placebo, in adults with type 2 diabetes.1 The label schedule also reaches its top dose, 14 mg, no earlier than day 61.1

Why is Rybelsus not as effective as Ozempic?

The Rybelsus label does not show that it is less effective. None of its trials compared it with the weekly Ozempic injection, so the label has no head-to-head result.1 It does let people on Ozempic 0.5 mg weekly switch to Rybelsus 7 mg or 14 mg daily.1 The two deliver semaglutide very differently: only about 0.4% to 1% of a Rybelsus dose reaches the bloodstream, while the Wegovy label puts absorption of injected semaglutide at 89%.15

Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?

No. Both are once-daily semaglutide tablets, but they are separate products with separate labels. Rybelsus (3, 7 and 14 mg) is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes.1 Wegovy tablets (1.5, 4, 9 and 25 mg), approved on December 22, 2025, carry the Wegovy weight reduction and cardiovascular uses.23 In the Wegovy tablet study of adults with obesity or overweight with a related condition, 25 mg daily averaged -13.6% body weight vs -2.4% on placebo at week 64.4 The Wegovy label advises against using it with other semaglutide products or any other GLP-1 drug.3
