Dosage information
Wegovy dosage
The Wegovy label starts the injection at 0.25 mg once weekly and raises it every 4 weeks.1 Maintenance from week 17 is 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg weekly, and some adults may go up to 7.2 mg for more weight reduction.1 The tablets climb monthly from 1.5 mg to 25 mg once daily.1 The prescriber sets each step.1

Injection schedule
Every schedule on this page is reported from the FDA label of the approved products, as background, and is not dosing advice for any reader. The prescriber applies it to each patient, sets every step and can slow the climb.1 The label uses the same 16-week climb for every approved use of the injection.1 Each step lasts 4 weeks, and the slow increase is meant to reduce stomach and bowel side effects.1
| Weeks | Once-weekly dose1 |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 0.25 mg |
| 5 to 8 | 0.5 mg |
| 9 to 12 | 1 mg |
| 13 to 16 | 1.7 mg |
| 17 onward | Maintenance dose for the approved use (next table) |
If a step is not tolerated, the label says to consider delaying the next increase for 4 weeks.1 The weekly dose falls on the same weekday, and neither the time of day nor meals matter.1
Maintenance dose by approved use
| Approved use | Maintenance dose1 | Notes1 |
|---|---|---|
| Weight reduction, adults | 2.4 mg (recommended) or 1.7 mg weekly | Up to 7.2 mg weekly after at least 4 weeks on 2.4 mg, if more weight reduction is clinically indicated |
| Weight reduction, children 12 and older | 2.4 mg (recommended) or 1.7 mg weekly | 7.2 mg is not established in children |
| Cardiovascular risk reduction, adults | 2.4 mg (recommended) or 1.7 mg weekly | 7.2 mg is not listed for this use |
| MASH with F2 to F3 fibrosis, adults | 2.4 mg weekly | May be lowered to 1.7 mg if not tolerated, with a return to 2.4 mg considered |
The 7.2 mg step, approved on March 19, 2026, is the Wegovy HD dose.5 Approved injected semaglutide doses run from 0.25 mg to 7.2 mg once weekly, so this is the top of that range.16
Tablet schedule
Wegovy tablets are approved for adults, for weight reduction and cardiovascular risk reduction.21
| Days | Once-daily tablet1 |
|---|---|
| 1 to 30 | 1.5 mg |
| 31 to 60 | 4 mg |
| 61 to 90 | 9 mg |
| 91 onward | 25 mg (maintenance) |
Only about 1% to 2% of an oral dose is absorbed, against 89% of an injection, so the daily tablet dose is far larger than the weekly injected dose.61 If 25 mg is not tolerated, the label suggests considering a switch to the 1.7 mg weekly injection.1
Missed doses
- Injection, next dose more than 2 days (48 hours) away. The missed dose is taken as soon as possible.1
- Injection, next dose less than 2 days away. The missed dose is skipped, and the next one is taken on the usual day.1
- Two or more weekly doses missed in a row. The label says to restart dose escalation at a lower dose, to reduce stomach side effects.1 The Medication Guide tells patients to contact their healthcare provider about restarting.1
- Tablet. The missed tablet is skipped and the next one is taken the following day, never more than one tablet a day.1
Switching forms and changing the day
People on the 2.4 mg injection may start 25 mg tablets one week after their last injection.1 People on 25 mg tablets may start the 2.4 mg injection the day after their last tablet.1 The weekly injection day can be changed as long as the last dose was given 2 or more days before.1
Which product gives which dose
Each single-dose pen or syringe holds one preset weekly dose, from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg, or 7.2 mg in the Wegovy HD pen.1 The FlexTouch pen can only be dialed to 2.4 mg and gives four weekly doses.1 Presentations and pen handling are covered in Wegovy injection sites and pen use.
Overdose and combined use
Overdose effects reported with GLP-1 drugs include severe nausea, severe vomiting and severe low blood sugar.1 Because semaglutide's half-life is about 1 week, observation and treatment may need to last a long time.1 After an overdose, the label suggests contacting the Poison Help line or a medical toxicologist.1 The label does not recommend using Wegovy with other semaglutide products or any other GLP-1 receptor agonist.1
Doses outside the label
The schedules above are the label's, for FDA-approved Wegovy pens, syringes and tablets.1 FDA says compounded GLP-1 drugs are not FDA approved, and that unapproved versions, including products labeled for research use, do not go through FDA review for safety, effectiveness or quality.7 Most dosing-error reports FDA described for compounded semaglutide involved patients drawing too much from a multiple-dose vial, taking 5 to 20 times the intended dose.8 FDA said confusion between milliliters, milligrams and syringe "units" may have contributed.8

Frequently asked questions
What are the incremental doses of Wegovy?
For the injection, the label uses 0.25 mg once weekly in weeks 1 to 4, 0.5 mg in weeks 5 to 8, 1 mg in weeks 9 to 12 and 1.7 mg in weeks 13 to 16.1 From week 17 the maintenance dose is 2.4 mg or 1.7 mg, or 2.4 mg for MASH.1 Adults who tolerate 2.4 mg for at least 4 weeks may be raised to 7.2 mg if more weight reduction is clinically indicated.1 The tablets rise monthly: 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg, then 25 mg daily.1
Can I start Wegovy at 0.5 mg?
The label's recommended starting dose is 0.25 mg once weekly for weeks 1 to 4.1 It explains that the step-by-step increase is there to reduce stomach and bowel side effects, and that the next increase can be delayed by 4 weeks if a step is not tolerated.1 After 2 or more missed weekly doses in a row, the label also says to restart the climb at a lower dose.1 Any change to the schedule is a decision for the prescriber.1
What is the recommended dosing for Wegovy pills?
One tablet a day: 1.5 mg on days 1 to 30, 4 mg on days 31 to 60, 9 mg on days 61 to 90, then the 25 mg maintenance dose from day 91.1 It is taken in the morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of plain water and swallowed whole, not split, crushed or chewed.1 The label then says to wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines.1 The tablets are approved for adults only.1
Is Wegovy stronger than Ozempic?
The ingredient is the same, semaglutide, but the doses differ.13 Ozempic, the brand approved for type 2 diabetes, starts at 0.25 mg weekly and tops out at 2 mg once weekly.4 Wegovy's recommended maintenance dose is 2.4 mg once weekly, and the label allows up to 7.2 mg weekly for adults who need more weight reduction after at least 4 weeks on 2.4 mg.1 Higher doses also brought more side effects: nausea affected 39% on 7.2 mg against 35% on 2.4 mg.1
