Easy Cannabis Dump Cake with a Cannabutter Blend

Three layers and no mixing bowl: fruit filling, dry cake mix and thin butter slices, with cannabutter blended in at a measured share for even squares.

This cannabis dump cake is an easy edible dessert with three layers and no mixing bowl. Pie filling goes on the bottom, dry cake mix in the middle and thin slices of butter on top. The one change that matters is the butter: a dump cake uses a lot of it, so you blend cannabutter with plain butter for a sensible dose per square.

Why the butter gets blended

This recipe takes 3/4 cup (12 tablespoons) of butter. Made with all cannabutter, each square could carry far more THC than most people want from dessert. So use just enough cannabutter for your target and make up the rest with plain butter. With an example cannabutter of about 15 mg THC per tablespoon, the blend works out like this:

CannabutterPlain butterEstimated THC per square (12 squares)
2 tablespoons10 tablespoonsAbout 2.5 mg
4 tablespoons8 tablespoonsAbout 5 mg
8 tablespoons4 tablespoonsAbout 10 mg

Your cannabutter will differ, so run the math with your own estimate. For scale, Michigan caps a store-bought adult-use edible at 10 mg THC per dose, as of October 2026. Our THC dosage guide covers choosing a starting amount.

What goes in a cannabis dump cake

Two cans of pie filling, an optional layer of cheesecake filling, one box of yellow or white cake mix, the butter blend and a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice. Making cannabutter from scratch? Layer it evenly

Even layers mean even doses. Spread the filling into the corners, dot the cheesecake filling across it and sprinkle the cake mix in a level layer without stirring. Mash the cannabutter and plain butter together, chill the blend until firm, then slice it thin and tile it over the top until almost no dry mix shows. The melting butter is what turns the mix into cake.

Variations

  • Apple filling with cinnamon, or peach with nutmeg.
  • Blueberry with lemon zest, or cherry over chocolate cake mix.
  • Vegan: a dairy-free cake mix, with coconut cream and measured canna-oil in place of the butter.

Cut, store and label

Let the cake cool for at least 30 minutes, then score 12 equal squares with a ruler or bench scraper. Cover the pan, label it 'contains THC' with the dose per square and the date, and refrigerate within two hours. Leftovers keep 3 to 4 days, and every container that leaves the pan gets its own label. Keep it away from children and pets, and if someone eats a square by accident, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans (21 ounces each) cherry, apple or peach pie filling
  • Optional: 8 ounces cheesecake filling, or cream cheese softened and beaten with 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 box (about 15 ounces) yellow or white cake mix
  • 3/4 cup (12 tablespoons) butter in total: your measured cannabutter plus plain butter, mashed together and chilled (see the dosing note)
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

Steps

  1. Set the oven to 350 °F and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

  2. Empty both cans of pie filling into the dish and push it out to the corners in an even layer.

  3. If using, dollop small spoonfuls of cheesecake filling across the fruit.

  4. Shake the dry cake mix over the top in a level layer and leave it unstirred.

  5. Cut the chilled butter blend into thin slices and lay them edge to edge over the mix until it is nearly covered. Dust with pumpkin pie spice.

  6. Bake 45 to 55 minutes, until golden on top and bubbling at the edges. Cool at least 30 minutes, then cut 12 equal squares.

Frequently asked questions

How much cannabutter goes in a dump cake?

Less than you might think. Decide your dose per square, multiply by 12, and divide by your cannabutter's estimated mg per tablespoon. That's your cannabutter; plain butter makes up the rest of the 3/4 cup. Using all cannabutter can make each square several times stronger than you planned.

Can I make it vegan?

Yes. Choose a dairy-free cake mix and a filling with no dairy, and skip the cheesecake layer. Stir your measured canna-oil into about 3/4 cup of coconut cream first. Then pour it evenly over the mix in place of butter, so the dose spreads across the whole pan.

Which fruit fillings work well?

Thick, juicy canned pie fillings are the way to go: cherry, apple, peach and blueberry all bubble up through the cake mix nicely. Pair each with a spice, like cinnamon with apple or nutmeg with peach. Standard pie filling gives the most even bake. Any dry patches of mix usually mean gaps in the butter layer, so tile the slices edge to edge.
