Marijuana Laws in Michigan and Nearby States

Every state writes its own cannabis law, and the rules change at each border. Start with Michigan, where all eight High Society stores are, then see how Indiana and Illinois compare for the visitors who drive in from there. Status as of October 2026.

State law guides

Three plain-language guides, each with its limits, its driving rules and its sources.

  • Legal for 21+

    Michigan

Legal for adults 21 and older since 2018, with a medical program since 2008. Limits, where you can use cannabis, driving and taxes.

  • Not legal

    Indiana

No legal adult-use or medical marijuana as of October 2026; possessing any amount is a crime. What Hoosiers visiting Michigan should know.

  • Legal for 21+

    Illinois

Adults 21 and older may buy and possess cannabis; the medical program is for Illinois residents. Visitor limits and the I-94 trip.

Why the rules stop at the state line

Cannabis is legal in Michigan because Michigan’s voters made it legal under state law: medical use in 2008 and adult use, for people 21 and older, in 2018. That law covers what happens in Michigan. Federal law is a separate layer, and as of October 2026 it still lists adult-use marijuana in Schedule I.

That is why High Society’s answer to travel questions never changes: cannabis purchases are legal in Michigan, but transporting cannabis across state lines is prohibited under federal law. It holds even between two states where cannabis is legal, because Michigan’s law does not protect cannabis once it leaves Michigan.

Our New Buffalo store sits just over the Indiana line on US-12, minutes from I-94, so many of its guests drive in from Indiana and Illinois. Their home states treat cannabis very differently, as the table below shows.
