A good summer cannabis lineup is small, portable and built around what you already enjoy. Start with your usual format, add one easy option for last-minute plans, and add an upgrade only if you're experienced. Pack everything sealed and keep edibles cool. Then keep consumption on private property, because Michigan doesn't allow it in public places like beaches and parks, or for anyone driving a car or a boat.
Start from what you already like
Summer is a fine time to try something new, but a lake weekend three hours from home isn't the place for a big experiment. Build around the format you know, and think of anything new as a small add-on.
A few questions help:
- How do you usually consume, and how much?
- Where will you be? A backyard, a friend's cottage and a rented cabin each come with their own rules.
- Who's coming? Everyone partaking needs to be 21 or older.
Our budtenders can help you build around those answers at any of our eight Michigan stores. You can also browse your store's menu on our shop page and order ahead for in-store or curbside pickup.
Flower for slow evenings, and how to judge freshness
Flower is the classic pick for an evening on a private porch or around a backyard campfire. Freshness is easy to check:
- Harvest date. Michigan labels list it, so you can see how recently the flower was grown.
- Look. Buds should look intact, not dusty or crumbled.
- Aroma. A strong, clean smell is a good sign. Flat or musty is not.
Heat is flower's summer enemy. Keep it in an airtight jar, out of the sun and out of hot cars. Our guide to storing cannabis covers containers, light and humidity.
Pre-rolls for last-minute plans
When a friend texts about a bonfire tonight, pre-rolls are the easy answer. They're ready to go, come in singles and multi-packs, and need nothing but a lighter.
Carry them in a crush-proof tube or their original packaging so they don't get bent or damp in a backpack or cooler bag. Mini pre-rolls are handy when you want a shorter session, and our pre-roll buyer's guide compares sizes, infused options and what to look for.
Vapes for portable, low-smell use
Vapes are compact and leave less lingering smell than smoke, which suits a cottage weekend where not everyone partakes.
Two summer cautions. Heat can thin vape oil, so don't leave a cartridge in a hot car or in direct sun. And low smell doesn't change the rules: vaping is still consumption, so the same limits on public use apply.
Buy cartridges from a licensed store, where products are tested. Our THC vape buying guide covers hardware, oil types and labels.
Edibles for no-smoke afternoons: serving sizes, heat and storage
Edibles skip smoke and smell entirely, which makes them a natural fit for a long afternoon on private property. They also take their time. In a controlled study, effects from eaten THC took 30 to 60 minutes to appear and peaked around 1.5 to 3 hours. Start low and give it time before you consider more.
In Michigan, an adult-use edible serving tops out at 10 mg of THC, with up to 200 mg in a package, as of October 2026. Cannabis drinks follow the same 10 mg serving limit, with up to 100 mg in a container. Look at the label's serving size before you pack.
Summer heat is hard on edibles:
- Chocolate melts and gummies stick together in a hot car or a sunny window.
- A small insulated bag or a cooler with an ice pack keeps them firm.
- Keep them in their original child-resistant packaging, in a separate, clearly marked container away from regular snacks.
- Never leave them where kids or pets can reach them.
That last point matters most at busy summer gatherings, where a gummy can look like any other snack.
Concentrates as the experienced upgrade
Concentrates such as live resin and live rosin are far stronger than flower and prized for their flavor. They also need gear, like a dab rig or a concentrate vaporizer.
That makes them an upgrade for experienced adults, not a vacation experiment. Keep them in a fridge or a cool bag, since heat changes their texture quickly, and start with a small amount if you're away from your usual setup.
The three-slot formula for a summer cannabis kit
Here's a simple way to build a lineup without overbuying:
- The base. The format you already know and like. This is most of your kit.
- The easy add-on. Something for spontaneous moments, like a pre-roll pack or a box of low-dose edibles.
- The upgrade. One new thing to try at a calm moment: a new strain, a cannabis drink or, for experienced adults, a concentrate.
| If you're... | Base | Easy add-on | Upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newer to cannabis | Low-dose edibles | Mini pre-rolls | A new edible flavor |
| A flower regular | An eighth of a favorite strain | A pre-roll multi-pack | A vape for low-smell evenings |
| A vape regular | Your usual cartridge | Low-dose edibles | A live resin cartridge |
| Experienced | Flower or a vape | Pre-rolls | Live rosin or live resin |

Michigan summer rules: where you can and can't consume
Michigan lets adults 21 and older carry up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis, with no more than 15 grams of it as concentrate. Where you consume is another matter. As of October 2026:
- No public consumption. Using cannabis in a public place isn't allowed, and public beaches and parks are public places.
- Private property, with permission. Owners can ban cannabis use or smoking on their property, so check the rules at a rented cottage before you light up.
- Not while driving or boating. No one may use cannabis while driving or in control of a car, motorboat, snowmobile or off-road vehicle. Smoking isn't allowed in a car's passenger area on a public road, and driving while impaired is never covered.
- Travel sealed. Transporting cannabis within the limit is allowed. Keeping it sealed in its packaging and in the trunk is the cautious habit.
- Federal land is different. Michigan's law doesn't protect you in places like Sleeping Bear Dunes or the national forests, where federal law applies. Leave cannabis at home for those trips.
- Stay in Michigan. Don't travel across state lines with cannabis. Bringing a Michigan purchase into Indiana is illegal under Indiana law, so if you shop at our New Buffalo store near the state line, enjoy it on the Michigan side.
