Picking the Right Pre-Roll: A Practical Buying Checklist

Singles or multipacks, half-gram or full gram, regular or infused: a practical checklist for choosing pre-rolls at the counter or on an online menu.

This pre-roll buying guide boils the choice down to four questions: what's inside, how much, how strong and how many. Pre-rolls with matching price tags can still differ in weight, in the kind of flower they hold and in whether concentrate has been added. Use the checklist below at the counter or on an online menu. For the basics of what pre-rolls are and how quality is judged, see our pre-rolls explainer.

Pre-rolls in brief, and why equal prices can hide big differences

A pre-roll is ground cannabis flower already rolled in paper and ready to light. From the outside, one looks much like the next, so the differences hide in the details:

  • Weight. A half-gram and a full gram can sell for about the same price per package, yet one holds twice the flower.
  • What's inside. Some pre-rolls are made from whole buds, while others use smaller pieces and trim, or a blend.
  • Added concentrate. Infused pre-rolls add oil, kief or another concentrate, which raises the THC in every gram.
  • Freshness. A recent harvest date and intact packaging point to a pre-roll that has kept more of its aroma.

Price only tells you something once you've compared those four.

Main types: classic, mini, multipack, infused and whole-flower

TypeWhat it isGood fit when
Classic singleOne standard pre-roll, commonly half a gram or a full gramYou're trying a strain or planning a one-off session
MiniA smaller joint, usually sold in packsYou want shorter sessions or easy portions
MultipackSeveral pre-rolls in one packageYou've found a strain you want more of
InfusedFlower with added concentrate such as oil, kief or resinYou're an experienced consumer who wants more potency
Whole-flowerMade from whole buds rather than trimFlavor and an even burn matter most to you

Formats overlap, too. You'll find infused multipacks, whole-flower minis and singles in several sizes, so read the package rather than the category name alone.

Whole flower, smalls, shake and trim

These words describe which parts of the plant went into the paper:

  • Whole flower means intact buds, ground just for the pre-roll.
  • Smalls are small buds from lower on the plant; they're still flower, just less photogenic.
  • Shake is the small loose bits that fall off buds as they're handled.
  • Trim is the small leaves clipped away from buds, which usually carry less resin than the buds themselves.

None of these is automatically bad, and not every pre-roll uses trim. They simply explain why two pre-rolls with the same strain name can smell, taste and burn differently. If a package doesn't say what's inside, ask your budtender.

Single or multipack: when each makes sense

Singles are the low-commitment choice. Pick one when you're trying a new strain, adding something small to a bigger order or picking up just enough for tonight.

Multipacks make sense once you know what you like. They can work out cheaper per pre-roll, but not always, so compare by weight. Here's the method:

  1. Find the total weight on each label. A five-pack of half-gram pre-rolls holds 2.5 grams; a single full gram holds 1 gram.
  2. Divide each price by its total grams.
  3. Compare the price per gram, then decide whether the difference is worth committing to a whole pack.

A pack of minis also helps with portions: a few small joints instead of one large one you won't finish in a sitting. And if you like variety, two or three different singles may suit you better than one bigger pack of the same strain.

Regular vs. infused pre-rolls: what added concentrate changes

Infused pre-rolls pair flower with concentrate. That might be oil or distillate mixed in or brushed on, kief blended through or dusted on the outside, or another extract. The result is a much stronger pre-roll than the flower alone would make.

How much stronger depends on the product, but concentrates sit far above flower. University of Colorado researchers had regular users buy legal-market products from a dispensary: flower at 16% or 24% THC for the flower group, and concentrates at 70% or 90% for the concentrate group. After using them, the concentrate group had more THC in their blood.

What to do with that:

  • Look for "infused" on the packaging, then check the THC for the whole pre-roll or pack.
  • Go slower. Have one puff, give it several minutes and decide from there.
  • Wait until you're experienced. Infused pre-rolls are for consumers who already know how regular flower affects them.

Our infused pre-roll guide covers the types in more detail.

Pre-roll sizes from minis to full grams, read with potency

Size and potency work together, so read them as a pair. A one-gram pre-roll at 20% THC holds about 200 mg of THC in total, while a half-gram at the same strength holds about 100 mg. You won't inhale every milligram, but the math explains why a big, strong pre-roll is more than most people need in one go.

For scale, a University of Pennsylvania working paper used more than 10,000 purchases reported in U.S. arrestee interviews to put the average joint at roughly 0.32 grams. Measured that way, a half-gram pre-roll is already above average, and a full gram is about three typical joints.

SizeRough comparisonOften chosen for
MiniSmaller than a half-gramA short session or a first try
Half-gramAbout one and a half typical jointsA solo session with room to stop early
Full gramAbout three typical jointsSharing among adults, or a few sittings

Whatever the size, you can put a pre-roll out once you've had enough and save the rest.

Pre-roll buying guide checklist: what to read on the label

In Michigan, every cannabis product a licensed store sells must come sealed, with a label giving the net weight, THC and CBD levels, the testing lab's name and the date of the test. Where they apply, it also names the harvest date and the strain, and it notes that the real THC and CBD numbers may vary by 10%. On a pre-roll, check:

  • Strain: the name, plus the type if listed.
  • THC: the potency, and whether it's shown per pre-roll, per pack or as a percentage.
  • Pack count: how many pre-rolls are inside.
  • Total weight: the net weight of the pack, which tells you the size of each pre-roll.
  • Infused or not: usually printed prominently.
  • Whole flower or trim: some packages say; if yours doesn't, ask.
  • Terpenes: some packages and listings show the top few.
  • Harvest date: a useful freshness check.

Our Michigan label guide goes through every line.

Keeping pre-rolls fresh at home

Ground flower has more exposed surface than a whole bud, so pre-rolls can dry out quicker than a jar of buds. A few habits help:

  • Keep them in their original sealed tube or package until you're ready.
  • Store them somewhere cool and dark. Heat and UV light break down terpenes, the compounds behind aroma.
  • Skip humid spots like the bathroom, and skip the fridge door, where temperatures swing.
  • Lock them up, or at least store them high, if children or pets live with you.

If you light a pre-roll and don't finish it, make sure it's fully out before you store it in an airtight container. Our storage guide has more tips. 21+ only. Please consume responsibly.

Frequently asked questions

Do pre-rolls cost more than rolling your own?

It depends, so do the math. Divide each option's price by its total weight to get the price per gram. A pre-roll includes the rolling and the packaging, while loose flower needs papers and a grinder, so count those if you don't already own them. Then weigh any difference against the convenience.

Half-gram or full gram: which size fits a solo session?

A half-gram is usually plenty for one person, and a mini is smaller still. One working paper, drawing on more than 10,000 reported U.S. purchases, estimated the typical joint at roughly 0.32 grams, so a full gram is a lot for one sitting. You can always put a pre-roll out and save the rest.

Does a multipack save money per joint?

Sometimes. Divide the pack price by its total weight and compare that with a single, since the pre-rolls in a pack may be smaller than a standard single. If the price per gram is lower and you like the strain, the pack is the better buy. Our deals page shows current offers.

Should a newer consumer skip infused pre-rolls?

Yes, at first. Infused pre-rolls add concentrate, which raises the THC well beyond what the same flower carries on its own. Start with a regular pre-roll, have one or two puffs, then give it several minutes before deciding on more. Once you know how regular flower affects you, an infused pre-roll is easier to judge.

How long does a sealed pre-roll stay fresh?

There's no fixed shelf life, so use the harvest date on the label as your guide and choose fresher stock when you can. Sealed packaging kept somewhere cool and dark holds aroma best. Once a package is open, the pre-rolls dry out faster, so plan to finish them sooner rather than later.
