How much is a quarter of weed? A quarter is one-fourth of an ounce of cannabis: 7 grams on a dispensary menu, or two eighths in one package. It's a handy middle size once you've found a strain you enjoy. Here's what 7 grams looks like, how many joints it rolls, how its price per gram compares and how it fits within Michigan's limits.
How much is a quarter of weed? 7 grams
An ounce is about 28.35 grams, and menus round it to 28, so a quarter ounce in grams works out to an even 7. Measured exactly, it's about 7.09 grams. A quarter equals two eighths, or half of a half.
What it looks like, and what people call it
Seven grams can fill a small jar or look surprisingly compact, depending on how dense the buds are. Tight, heavy buds take up less room than fluffy ones of the same weight, so trust the net weight printed on a licensed package.
You'll hear it called a quarter, a Q, a quarter O or quarter oz, or simply seven, for the grams.
Joints per quarter
| Joint size | Flower per joint | Joints from a quarter |
|---|---|---|
| Slim | 0.3 g | About 23 |
| Standard | 0.5 g | 14 |
| Large | 1 g | 7 |
Researchers who studied more than 10,000 U.S. cannabis purchases put the average joint at about 0.31 to 0.32 grams. At that size, a quarter rolls roughly 22.
Quarter vs. gram and eighth: value per gram
A quarter usually costs less per gram than an eighth or a single gram. Divide each price by its weight to compare: 7 for a quarter, 3.5 for an eighth and 1 for a gram. If you go through flower steadily, a half may stretch your budget further, and our cannabis measurements chart compares every size.
What moves the price
- Quality tier. Premium buds cost more than smalls or shake.
- Potency and strain. High-THC flower and in-demand strains usually cost more.
- Taxes. Adult-use sales carry a 10% excise tax and the 6% sales tax, about 16.6% together, while registered medical patients pay only the 6%. As of October 2026, a 24% wholesale tax, in effect since January 1, 2026, also applies when growers and processors first sell to retailers, and it can be passed along.

What a quarter is good for
- Sticking with a favorite. Once an eighth has won you over, a quarter keeps that strain on hand longer.
- A small batch. About 14 half-gram joints, or a modest batch of infused butter.
- Sharing. Michigan lets adults 21 and older give up to 2.5 ounces to another adult 21 or older, as long as nothing is exchanged and the gift isn't advertised.
Michigan possession limits and storage
- Carrying. Adults 21 and older may carry up to 2.5 ounces, with a 15-gram cap on concentrate. A quarter is a tenth of that.
- Buying. Licensed adult-use stores sell up to 2.5 ounces per transaction and check government-issued photo ID before every sale.
- At home. The limit is 10 ounces plus your own plants' harvest, and anything past 2.5 ounces must be kept locked.
- Storage. An airtight glass jar in a cool, dark, locked spot keeps flower fresh and away from kids and pets. See our guide to storing cannabis.
- Travel. Don't travel across state lines with cannabis.
