Finding Top-Rated Cannabis Online: How to Read Ratings and Reviews

Star ratings help only if you read them well. Here's how to weigh averages and review counts, what good reviews mention by product type and how to turn a short list into a pickup order.

The best rated cannabis products aren't always the ones with the most stars. A star average is only as good as the reviews behind it: a 4.7 from hundreds of shoppers tells you far more than a perfect 5.0 from three. This guide covers how to read cannabis reviews and how to weigh averages against review counts. It also shows what useful reviews mention for flower, vapes, edibles and concentrates, which red flags to skip and how to turn a short list into a pickup order at your nearest High Society store.

Why online menus blur together, and how ratings help

Scroll through any online cannabis menu and products start to look alike: similar names, similar THC numbers, similar photos. Cannabis product reviews add something a listing can't, which is the shared experience of people who already bought the product.

Where you find ratings varies. Some brand sites, review sites and dispensary menu ratings show stars and comments, and some menus don't show them at all. Wherever you read them, count them as one input alongside the label, the price and your own preferences, not as the final word.

What makes a product genuinely well rated

A product earns a strong reputation when:

  • Praise is consistent. Many reviews say similar, specific things over months, not just one burst of enthusiasm.
  • Details hold up. Reviewers describe the product the same way across purchases, which suggests consistent batches.
  • Complaints are scattered. Every product has a few critics, but the same defect showing up again and again is a pattern.
  • The label backs it up. Ratings sit alongside the label numbers: THC and CBD, the net weight, the test date and, for flower, the harvest date. Our guide to reading a cannabis label shows where each number sits on a Michigan package.

Best rated cannabis products: star average vs number of reviews

The average gets the attention, but the count tells you how much to trust it.

Picture two vapes. One has a perfect 5.0 from three reviews. The other has a 4.7 from 240. Now imagine each gets one new 3-star review. The first drops to 4.5. The second barely moves, to about 4.69. A score built on a few reviews swings with every new opinion, while a score built on hundreds stays steady.

A quick way to read any rating:

  1. Check the count first. A handful of reviews is a first impression, not a verdict.
  2. Then check the average. Among products with plenty of reviews, small differences in the average start to mean something.
  3. Look at the spread. A pile of 5-star and 1-star reviews with little in between often signals inconsistency.
  4. Favor recent reviews. Growers change, recipes change and batches vary, so last month's reviews say more than last year's.

What useful reviews mention

The most helpful reviews read like a friend's notes. They mention:

  • Consistency: whether the product was the same from one purchase to the next.
  • Freshness: for flower, aroma and moisture; for edibles, texture and taste.
  • Hardware: for vapes, the draw, leaks, clogs and battery life.
  • Taste and smell: whether the flavor matched the description, and whether it was harsh.
  • Onset: how long effects took to arrive, especially for edibles and drinks.
  • Context: how much the reviewer took and how experienced they are.

Descriptions of how a product made someone feel are worth reading, but they're personal. Your experience may be quite different.

When your own preferences beat the crowd

Ratings reflect other people's tolerance, tastes and expectations. A crowd favorite might be stronger than you'd like, or have a flavor you don't enjoy. Once you've tried a few products, your own notes become the most reliable rating you have.

Keep it simple: the product, how much you took, the time and how it felt. After a few entries, patterns show up, and you'll know which numbers and formats suit you. If you're just starting out, our guide to your first dispensary visit covers the basics. Our budtenders are there to ask the right questions and help you find a good fit.

Red flags in cannabis product reviews

Skip or discount reviews like these:

  • Tiny sample sizes. Three reviews can't tell you much, however glowing they are.
  • Vague praise. "Amazing, best ever" with no details doesn't help you choose.
  • Off-topic complaints. A review about a long line or a parking lot says something about that day, not about the product.
  • Copy-paste patterns. Several reviews with nearly identical wording, or a sudden burst of perfect scores, deserve skepticism.
  • Health promises. A review saying a product fixed a medical problem is a red flag. Michigan's rules bar health claims in marijuana marketing, and one reviewer's experience isn't medical evidence.
  • Old news. Reviews from long ago may describe a different batch or formula.

Building a smarter cart and placing a pickup order

When you order cannabis online for pickup, a short list makes the rest quick:

  1. Narrow it down. Pick two or three options per category, compare their label numbers and set a budget.
  2. Look for savings. Check our deals page before you order, and ask about joining The Society, our free loyalty program, where members earn points on qualifying purchases. The club member program page has the details.
  3. Choose your store and browse its menu. Start from our online shop, pick your High Society store and add products and quantities to your cart.
  4. Schedule pickup. Choose a pickup time and complete your details. First-time customers show a valid ID, and returning customers can sign in for a faster checkout.
  5. Pick curbside if you like. Let the store know at checkout, and you'll get a text when your order is ready.

Bring your ID either way, since the store checks it before every sale. Selection varies by store and changes often, so check today's availability. 21+ only. Please consume responsibly.

Frequently asked questions

Are cannabis product reviews trustworthy?

Some are, and patterns are more trustworthy than any single review. Look for many detailed, recent reviews that describe the same strengths, and discount vague praise, off-topic complaints and sudden bursts of perfect scores. Reviews reflect other people's tolerance and tastes, so weigh them alongside the label and your own notes.

Is a 5-star product with few reviews better than a 4.7 with many?

Usually not. A perfect score from three reviews can drop sharply with one middling review, while a 4.7 built on hundreds of reviews barely moves. The larger count is the more reliable signal. Among products with plenty of reviews, small differences in the average begin to matter more.

What should a good vape review mention?

The hardware first: how the device draws, whether it leaked or clogged and how the battery held up. Then flavor, including whether it matched the description or tasted burnt, and whether cartridges were consistent from one purchase to the next. Notes on how much the reviewer took and their experience level add helpful context.

Can I order online and pick up in store?

Yes. Every High Society store has its own online menu. Choose your store in our online shop, add products and quantities and schedule a pickup time. First-time customers show a valid ID, and returning customers can sign in. For curbside, let the store know at checkout, and you'll get a text when your order is ready.
