Build-Your-Own Cannabis Avocado Toast Bar

Toast, avocado and a spread of toppings, with infused olive oil served on the side so every guest picks their own dose, or none at all.

A cannabis avocado toast bar is brunch made easy: toasted bread, ripe avocados and a spread of toppings, with infused olive oil set out on the side. Nothing gets dosed in the kitchen. Each guest drizzles their own measured amount, or skips it, so a brunch for two or twenty stays in everyone's control.

Set up a dosing station

Give the infused oil its own spot, away from the food:

  • The infused olive oil in a labeled cruet or dropper bottle, with a dedicated 1/2-teaspoon measure.
  • A dose card showing the estimated mg of THC per 1/2 teaspoon, plus a reminder to start low and wait.
  • A bottle of plain olive oil right beside it, so a drizzle for flavor never adds THC.

An edible can take a good half hour, or as long as two hours, to show up, so the plan is one measured drizzle and some patience. Our THC dosage guide explains how to pick a starting amount.

What to set out for cannabis avocado toast

Start with sturdy bread you can slice thick, about one ripe avocado for every two toasts, lemon wedges, flaky salt and pepper. Then the toppings: soft-boiled or fried eggs, smoked salmon or Michigan smoked whitefish, goat cheese or ricotta, radishes, quick pickles, cherry tomatoes, chili flakes and fresh herbs. Adding an infused berry freezer jam or super green pesto to the spread? Label them too, and remind guests that everything infused counts toward the same dose.

Toast, smash, drizzle

Brush the bread with plain olive oil and toast it until the edges crisp. Smash or slice the avocado at the last minute and season it with lemon, salt and pepper. Guests build their own toasts and finish with a measured drizzle of infused oil, if they want one.

Hosting a cannabis brunch

  • Keep it to adults 21+, and tell everyone up front which oil is infused.
  • Make zero THC easy, with plain oil, non-infused drinks and plenty of food.
  • Dose early in the day and keep it at home. Michigan law doesn't allow cannabis use in public places.
  • Plan rides home. Michigan law bars driving while under the influence, and an edible can stay with you for as long as 12 hours.

For drinks, our self-serve citrus mimosa bar runs on the same guests-dose-themselves idea.

After brunch

Pour the infused oil back into its labeled bottle as soon as brunch ends, and store it somewhere cool and dark that children and pets can't get to. If anyone swallows infused oil by accident, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. The leftover toppings are plain and go in the fridge as usual.

Ingredients

  • 8 thick slices of sourdough, rye or multigrain bread
  • 4 ripe avocados
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges
  • Flaky salt and black pepper
  • Plain extra-virgin olive oil, for toasting and for the table
  • Infused olive oil in a labeled cruet or dropper bottle, with a 1/2-teaspoon measure and a dose card (see the dosing note)
  • Toppings: 4 to 8 eggs, smoked salmon or whitefish, goat cheese or ricotta, sliced radishes, quick pickles, cherry tomatoes, chili flakes, fresh herbs

Steps

  1. Set up the dosing station before guests arrive: infused oil, its measure, the dose card and a bottle of plain olive oil together, away from the food.

  2. Cook the eggs (soft-boiled eggs hold well for a crowd) and put the other toppings in small bowls.

  3. Brush the bread with plain olive oil and toast it in a hot skillet or a 425 °F oven until golden at the edges.

  4. Halve the avocados just before serving and smash or slice them. Brighten with lemon, salt and pepper.

  5. Guests build their own toasts and add a measured drizzle of infused oil only if they choose.

  6. When brunch is over, return the infused oil to its labeled bottle and put it away.

Frequently asked questions

How much infused oil goes on one toast?

One measured 1/2 teaspoon or less, depending on what your dose card says it contains. Homemade oil is an estimate, so first-timers should go smaller still: about 2.5 mg of THC or less, which is around 1/4 teaspoon of an oil carded at 5 mg per 1/2 teaspoon. Eat the toast, then wait at least 2 hours before adding more. Plain olive oil is right there for extra richness.

Can canna-oil taste less grassy?

Yes. Many cooks find that straining gently, without squeezing the plant material, and starting with a fruity olive oil keep the flavor milder. Store the oil cool and dark. At the table, lemon, flaky salt, chili and bold toppings like pickles or smoked fish balance whatever grassiness remains.

Can I use cannabutter instead of oil?

Yes. Melt it gently and keep it warm in a small dish with its own measuring spoon and dose card, since it firms up as it cools. It's lovely with eggs. Just don't set out infused butter and infused oil together without making clear that both count toward one dose.
