Chocolate-Swirl Cannabis Banana Bread

Swap only part of the butter for cannabutter, marble in melted chocolate and cut even slices: a gift-worthy loaf where every piece carries an estimated dose.

This chocolate-swirl cannabis banana bread is a moist, marbled infused quick bread built on one simple idea: only part of the butter is cannabutter. You choose the dose per slice, swap in exactly that much infused butter and cut even slices. Bake one big loaf for a crowd, or four mini loaves to share.

How to dose cannabis banana bread

  1. Count your slices: a 9x5 loaf cuts neatly into 10, and four mini loaves into 3 each.
  2. Multiply your target mg per slice by the number of slices. That's the THC the batch needs.
  3. Divide by your cannabutter's estimated mg per tablespoon. That's how much cannabutter to use; plain butter makes up the rest of the 1/2 cup.

Melt the two butters together and whisk them into the wet ingredients first, so every slice gets its share. The same partial-swap math works for pot brownies and cannabis cookies, and our THC dosage guide helps you choose a starting amount.

Ingredients for cannabutter banana bread

Very ripe, well-spotted bananas, flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, buttermilk, eggs, vanilla, the butter blend and a cup of chocolate chips melted for the swirl. Buttermilk keeps the crumb tender; 1/2 cup of milk with 1 1/2 teaspoons of lemon juice stands in if you're out. Making cannabutter from scratch? Mixing and baking

Mash the bananas well, whisk in the wet ingredients and fold everything into the dry just until no flour shows, then marble in the chocolate batter. A full loaf bakes about an hour at 350 °F, and mini loaves take roughly half that. Let the bread cool completely, or the slices crumble and come out uneven.

Storage and labeling

Wrapped tightly, the bread keeps at room temperature for a few days, or you can freeze it by the slice. Label every loaf and freezer bag 'contains THC' with the dose per slice and the date, and keep it somewhere children and pets can't reach. If someone eats a slice by accident, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Gifting it the right way

Banana bread is a classic gift, and this one comes with conditions. Give it only to adults 21 and older who know it's infused, with the dose written on the label. Michigan law lets adults give cannabis, within legal limits, to another adult 21+ when nothing is received in return and the gift isn't advertised. So these loaves are for sharing, never for selling; our Michigan cannabis law guide has the limits. More gift-worthy bakes are in our holiday infused recipes.

Prep time

Cook time
1 hour

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 very ripe bananas, mashed (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (8 tablespoons) butter in total: your measured cannabutter plus plain butter, melted together (see the dosing note)
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Steps

  1. Set the oven to 350 °F. Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan, or four mini loaf pans, and line with parchment.

  2. Whisk the flour, baking soda and salt together in a medium bowl.

  3. In a large bowl, whisk the melted butter blend and sugar until smooth, then whisk in the bananas, buttermilk, eggs and vanilla.

  4. Tip the dry ingredients into the wet and fold with a spatula just until no dry flour is visible.

  5. Melt the chocolate chips in 20-second microwave bursts, stirring between each, and cool for 3 minutes. Stir 1 cup of the batter into the chocolate.

  6. Spoon plain and chocolate batter into the pan in alternating dollops, then swirl with a knife two or three times.

  7. Bake 55 to 65 minutes for a loaf, or 30 to 35 for minis, until a skewer comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in the pan, then completely on a rack, before cutting even slices.

Frequently asked questions

How much cannabutter should go in banana bread?

Only as much as your dose calls for. Multiply your target mg per slice by the number of slices, then divide by your cannabutter's estimated mg per tablespoon. Use that much cannabutter and plain butter for the rest. For a first batch, aim low: Health Canada suggests new consumers start at 2.5 mg of THC or less.

How do I get the swirl?

Stir about a cup of finished batter into melted, slightly cooled chocolate. Layer alternating spoonfuls of plain and chocolate batter in the pan, then run a butter knife through it in two or three slow S-shapes. Stop there. Extra swirling blends the two batters into one brown loaf.

Can I freeze infused banana bread?

Yes, and freezing by the slice makes portioning easy. Wrap each cooled slice, bag them together and label the bag with the dose per slice and the date. Use them within 3 to 4 months. Thaw a slice at room temperature for about an hour, or warm it briefly in a low oven.
