A good cannabis weekend getaway starts with two questions: where will you consume, and how will you get there and back? In Michigan, adults 21 and over can carry up to 2.5 ounces, but public consumption isn't allowed, property hosts can say no, and cannabis stays off-limits behind the wheel. Here are six Michigan weekend trip ideas, the formats that suit each, and the travel basics that keep it legal.
Planning a cannabis weekend getaway
Four questions do most of the work:
- Where? On private property, with the host's OK. Not a beach, trail, park or car.
- When? After the driving is done for the day.
- What? Products that travel well in their original sealed packaging, like pre-rolls in tubes, vape cartridges and packaged edibles.
- How much? Less than at home, since a long travel day and new surroundings can change how cannabis feels.
Pack only what you'll use; Michigan's carry limit is 2.5 ounces, no more than 15 grams of it concentrate. For more inspiration, see cannabis tourism destinations.
A cozy weekend in a rented cabin
A cabin Up North, or a cottage near the lake, is a classic Michigan weekend. Before you pack cannabis, ask the host: Michigan law lets property owners and managers ban or limit cannabis on their property, though a lease can't block a tenant from keeping it or using it any way but smoking. A listing that says nothing isn't a yes.
Asking about weed-friendly cabins in Michigan
Never assume a rental allows cannabis; get the answer in writing. If smoking is out but other use is fine, edibles or a tincture keep the cabin smoke-free. Bring a board game, and plan meals before anyone takes an edible.
An arts-and-culture weekend close to home
A staycation can feel like a real trip. Spend the day at galleries or a show and keep cannabis for the evening at home. Our East Lansing store's page lists the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum and the Wharton Center for Performing Arts as neighbors. The Charlotte page names the Courthouse Square Museum and the Charlotte Performing Arts Center.
Cannabis staycation ideas for the evening: a sketchbook session, a vinyl night or a film you've been saving, with a low-dose edible or a shared pre-roll. Never drive after.
A spa night at home
Some weekends don't need a road trip at all. A spa night at home pairs well with low, slow cannabis:
- A face mask, a foot soak and a robe.
- A cannabis topical, chosen for its scent and feel.
- A low-dose edible or tincture taken early, so it peaks while you're settled in.
- A calm playlist and your phone on silent.
Keep water close, and stick to one product at a time.
Hosting friends in the backyard
Your own backyard, or a host's with their blessing, is private property and a natural fit.
- Keep it to adults 21 and over. Michigan law lets adults share as much as 2.5 ounces (concentrate capped at 15 grams) with other adults 21+ when nothing is received in return, and never with anyone younger.
- Set out food, water and a low-dose option for lighter users.
- Keep smoke and noise neighbor-friendly.
- Line up rides home or spare beds early, and go easy if alcohol is on the table too.
A day outdoors, and the places you can't consume
Color tours, dune hikes and lake days define a Michigan weekend, but cannabis belongs back at your lodging. Michigan doesn't allow consuming cannabis in public places, so count beaches, parks and public trails as off-limits. On federal land, such as a national forest or Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Michigan's law offers no protection: federal law applies, and as of October 2026, possessing adult-use marijuana there is a federal offense. Michigan law also bars using cannabis while operating a motorboat, snowmobile or off-road vehicle.

A weekend alone to reset
Solo weekends are a good time to keep things simple. Choose a product you already know, take a little less than usual, and fill the days with unhurried things: a long morning walk, a real meal, a book or a journal. If you're somewhere remote, let someone know your plans.
Packing and travel laws in Michigan
These cannabis road trip tips keep the whole drive legal:
- Possession: adults 21+ can carry up to 2.5 ounces, no more than 15 grams of it concentrate.
- In the car: transporting cannabis is legal, but using it while driving isn't, and neither is smoking in the passenger area on a public road. The cautious move is to keep it sealed, out of reach, and in the trunk if you have one.
- Driving: Michigan bans driving under the influence, so plan cannabis for after you've parked for the day.
- State lines: carrying cannabis from one state into another breaks federal law, even between two legal states. Indiana, just over the line from our New Buffalo store, has no legal adult-use or medical marijuana as of October 2026.
- Flying: TSA refers illegal substances it finds to law enforcement, and as of October 2026, adult-use marijuana is still federally illegal. Leave it home.
