A Quick Cannabis-Infused Smoothie, Four Ways

Frozen fruit, milk and yogurt make the base, and one measured tincture dose or spoon of canna-oil makes it infused. Change the flavor, keep the dose.

This cannabis smoothie recipe is a simple formula: frozen fruit, milk and yogurt, plus one measured dose of a THC or CBD tincture or a small spoon of canna-oil. Because the infusion is measured per glass, you can change flavors as often as you like without redoing any math. It's a quick blend for a slow weekend morning or an afternoon at home.

One measured dose per glass

Whether it's a THC smoothie or a CBD smoothie, make one glass at a time with one measured dose in it. With a tincture, the label gives you a close figure for what went in; with homemade canna-oil, the number is a rougher estimate. If you're new to THC, start small: Health Canada suggests new consumers look for 2.5 mg of THC or less. Our THC dosage guide explains how to find your amount.

Tincture or canna-oil?

  • Tincture: the easiest to measure. Labels list mg per ml, and a marked dropper keeps each dose consistent. Our cannabis tincture guide covers the basics.
  • Canna-oil or cannabutter: THC dissolves in fat, not water, so an oil infusion mixes in best when the blend has some fat to carry it. Yogurt, whole milk or nut butter helps. Melt cannabutter first, or it firms into flecks on the frozen fruit. Making your own? Start with our canna-oil recipe.

Using infused almond butter as your nut butter? Count it as the dose and skip the tincture. And don't expect an indica or sativa label to make a smoothie calming or energizing; research shows those labels don't reliably reflect a plant's genetics. Our indica vs. sativa guide explains why.

How to blend it

Liquid goes in first, then the yogurt and infusion, then the frozen fruit, so the blades catch. Blend a full minute when you use an oil infusion. Thin it with milk or thicken it with ice, taste, and pour.

Storage and labeling

Drink it fresh, since the infusion can settle as it sits. For meal prep, freeze bags of fruit and add-ins and add the dose when you blend. Or freeze finished single-dose smoothies, each labeled with the cannabinoid, dose and date, on a shelf children and pets can't reach. Recipe

Makes
1 smoothie (about 16 ounces)
Prep time
5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frozen fruit (see the flavor table)
  • 3/4 cup milk of your choice
  • 1/2 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
  • 1 measured dose of THC or CBD tincture, or 1 to 2 teaspoons canna-oil or melted cannabutter (see the dosing note)
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon nut butter or chia seeds
  • Optional: 1 to 2 teaspoons honey, a drop of vanilla, a few ice cubes

Steps

  1. Pour the milk into the blender, then add the yogurt, the measured infusion and any nut butter or seeds.

  2. Add the frozen fruit on top and blend on high for 45 to 60 seconds, until silky. Oil infusions need the full minute.

  3. Check the texture. Add a splash of milk to loosen it or a few ice cubes to thicken it, then blend again.

  4. Taste, sweeten if you like, and pour it all into one glass.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use tincture or canna-oil in a smoothie?

Tincture, if precision matters most. It's labeled in mg per ml and disappears into the blend. Canna-oil works well too, especially with yogurt or nut butter to carry it, but homemade oil is always an estimate. Whichever you choose, use one measured dose per glass, never a free pour.

Can I use CBD instead of THC?

Yes. A CBD tincture goes in the same way, measured by the label. CBD doesn't cause the high that THC does, but check the label's THC figure too, since Michigan's licensed cannabis products list both on the label. If you take any medications, ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding CBD to your routine.

How long does an infused smoothie take to work?

Expect a wait. An edible may not register for half an hour, sometimes not for two, and it can keep building for up to 4 hours. A rich, fatty blend may land later than you expect: in one study, THC capsules taken after a high-fat meal peaked later, and more THC was absorbed overall. Effects may linger for as long as 12 hours.
