The Best THC-Infused Drinks, and How to Choose One

Seltzers, sodas, mocktails and more: what makes a good THC drink, how fast drinks kick in, and how to sip one sensibly.

The best THC drinks tell you exactly what's inside and make the dose easy to control. Look for clear milligrams per serving, a sensible number of servings, a resealable cap and a flavor you'd enjoy anyway. Here's how the main styles compare, how fast cannabis beverages work, how to pace one and how to make your own.

Why THC drinks became their own category

THC drinks offer a smoke-free option that feels as familiar as opening a soda, with nothing to light. They also solve a chemistry problem: THC is an oil, and oil doesn't mix with water. Drink makers use emulsions, which break the oil into tiny droplets so the dose spreads evenly through the liquid.

Sipped slowly, a low-dose drink sets a lighter, more social pace than a strong gummy eaten in one bite.

THC drink styles at a glance

Most THC-infused drinks fall into a few familiar styles. Pick one for the occasion, then let the label make the final call.

What makes the best THC drinks stand out

  • Milligrams per serving. Every licensed Michigan product lists its THC and CBD content. Lower doses, such as 2 to 5 mg, make it easier to find your comfort zone.
  • Servings per container. Single-serve cans are simplest. Multi-serving bottles mean measuring each pour.
  • A resealable cap. It lets you save the rest of a multi-serving bottle for another day.
  • Activation time. Michigan labels list one, which helps you plan your evening.
  • CBD ratio. Some drinks add CBD, which isn't intoxicating, so the THC number is still the one to watch.

How fast do THC drinks work?

Swallowed THC is absorbed slowly through the digestive system. The CDC notes that blood THC levels peak about one to two hours after eating, compared with 5 to 10 minutes when smoked. The effects also last longer.

Many drinks use fast-acting emulsions, and makers often say the first effects arrive within 15 to 30 minutes. Research on drink timing is still limited, so plan as if any drink might need two hours to peak. The CDC has warned that people may take several servings before the first one kicks in. Our look at THC drink and edible timing compares onset, peak and duration.

How to dose a THC drink: sip, wait, then decide

A THC drink isn't a beer, so count milligrams, not cans.

  1. Start small, with a few milligrams if you're new or out of practice.
  2. Pour one measured serving into a glass and close the bottle.
  3. Sip slowly, over 15 minutes or more.
  4. Wait at least an hour, and up to two, before deciding on more.
  5. Stay in or arrange a ride. Michigan law bars driving under the influence.

Keep drinks in their original packaging, apart from regular sodas, and store them where kids and pets can't get to them. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, take medications or have a health condition, talk with your doctor before trying THC drinks.

THC drinks vs. alcohol: why not to mix them

Pairing a THC seltzer with a beer might sound harmless, but research says otherwise. In a 2026 study in JAMA Network Open, adults who combined a THC edible with alcohol showed more impairment in a driving simulator and felt more intoxicated than with either one alone.

Some adults choose a THC drink for a night off from alcohol. It's a different experience rather than an automatically better one: slower to start, longer lasting and still a reason to leave the car keys at home.

DIY: a measured tincture or a little RSO in a mocktail

You can also make your own, as long as you start from a product with a clear milligram count.

  • Tincture. The label lists THC per milliliter, so a marked dropper lets you measure each dose. Stir it into a mocktail such as our pineapple grapefruit THC sparkler, or browse our guide to cannabis mocktails.
  • RSO. This thick, concentrated oil goes a long way and won't mix into water, so blend a carefully portioned amount into something creamy, like a smoothie. Read what to know about RSO first, and wait two full hours before having more.

Label anything you make and keep it apart from everyday drinks.

Finding THC drinks in Michigan

Licensed dispensaries carry THC drinks, and what's on hand changes often and varies by store. If a label leaves you with questions, the budtenders at your nearest High Society store can walk you through serving sizes and milligrams.

You may also see hemp-derived THC drinks outside dispensaries. They follow different rules than licensed marijuana products, and those rules are changing. As of October 2026, Congress has narrowed the federal definition of hemp, and most intoxicating hemp-THC products are set to stop qualifying as legal hemp in late 2026, though further changes are possible.

Frequently asked questions

Will a THC drink get me high like an edible?

Yes. Think of a THC drink as an edible you sip: the THC is swallowed and processed the same way. Fast-acting formulas may come on sooner than a gummy, but the effects can still last for hours. Start low, wait before having more and stay off the road.

How fast do THC drinks kick in?

It varies. Fast-acting drinks are often said to start within 15 to 30 minutes, while traditional edibles can take one to two hours to peak. Sip one serving, then wait at least an hour, and up to two, before deciding on more.

Can you buy THC drinks in Michigan?

Yes. If you're 21 or older, you can buy them at licensed dispensaries; just bring a valid ID. Registered medical patients 18 and older can shop with their registry card and a photo ID. Michigan caps drinks at 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per container. Selection varies from store to store.

Do THC drinks cause a hangover?

The evidence is thin. A University of Sydney review of 20 studies found limited evidence that cannabis impairs performance the next day, and the researchers said more research is needed. If you have an early start, a smaller dose taken earlier in the evening is the cautious choice.
