A red, weeping eye should not mean a long wait or a guess

It usually starts overnight. You wake up with one eye red and watering, the lashes stuck together, maybe a little swollen, and the first worry is whether it is going to spread to the other eye or to the kids. Then come the bad options: a long ER wait for something that is not quite an emergency, an urgent-care clinic that is not set up for eyes, or a drugstore drop you hope is the right one while the eye gets worse.

None of those actually tells you what is wrong. A red eye can be viral, bacterial, or allergic, and each one is handled differently, so a guess at the pharmacy can treat the wrong thing entirely and cost you days.

That is the gap we close. Riverside Family Eye Care is here for Fort Myers families and adults who want thorough, personal eye care from optometrists who take the time to look and find the cause, not a rushed guess and not hours in a waiting room built for everything except eyes.

Three things you get by coming in

Not a guess. A prompt look, a real diagnosis of the type, and a plan with a straight answer on contagion and getting back to work or school.

Seen as soon as we can

A goopy, red eye does not belong on next week's schedule. Call us and we will see you as soon as we can.

A real diagnosis, not a guess

Pink eye comes in different forms, viral, bacterial, and allergic, and they are not treated the same way. Our optometrists take the time to examine the eye and tell which one you actually have, instead of handing over a drop and hoping it fits. That is the difference between treating the eye and treating a symptom.

The right plan, and a straight answer

You leave knowing the cause, what to do about it, and the two things people most want to hear: whether it is contagious, and when it is safe to go back to work or school. Plain guidance, in words you can follow.

What happens when you come in

A close, magnified look at the eyelids and the surface of the eye lets our optometrists see exactly what is going on rather than judge it from across the room, and reading the discharge and your history tells its own story, since watery, stringy, or thick and yellow-green point in different directions and are a big part of telling viral from bacterial from allergic.

Just as important is ruling out the look-alikes that matter. A scratch on the cornea, iritis, or a foreign body under the lid can all masquerade as pink eye, and those need to be caught, not missed. You leave with a written treatment plan matched to the cause: lubrication and cool compresses for a viral eye, allergy care for an allergic one, or prescription drops or ointment when the cause is bacterial.

Our optometrists treat pink eye right here, alongside red eye, a foreign body in the eye, and sudden flashes or floaters. And here is the honest part: not every pink eye needs an antibiotic. A viral or allergic eye is not helped by an antibiotic, and we will tell you so rather than hand you a drop you do not need.

Diagnosed, treated, and easy to reach

We will not dress that up with a cure rate or a promise we cannot keep. The plain reason to come here is that a red eye is looked at by someone who works with eyes all day, finds the actual cause, and follows up if it does not clear.

Where a red, goopy eye should actually go

The usual choices do not fit a red eye well. A retail optical counter or a rushed big-box chain can sell you glasses but cannot diagnose an infection. Days of drugstore drops may treat the wrong cause and let the real one drag on. And a general ER can help, but often means a long wait to be seen by someone who does not work with eyes all day.

Here it works the other way. Our Fort Myers optometrists find the actual cause instead of guessing, give you the treatment that fits it, and follow up if the eye does not clear the way it should. That is the whole point of coming to an eye practice for an eye problem.

Not sure it is conjunctivitis?

Honest answers before you come in

Can I be seen today?

Call us and we will see you as soon as we can. Tell us what is going on, and we find you the soonest time. If we are closed when you call, leave a message or use the appointment request form and we will reach you as soon as we open.

Is pink eye always contagious, and do I need antibiotics?

It depends on the cause, which is exactly why it is worth getting looked at. Viral pink eye is contagious but is not helped by antibiotics, it usually has to run its course with comfort care. Bacterial pink eye can be treated with prescription drops or ointment. Allergic pink eye is not contagious at all and is handled with allergy care, not antibiotics. Guessing wrong is how people end up on a drop that does nothing, so we find the cause first.

When can I go back to work or school?

That is one of the first things we sort out for you, because the answer depends on the type and how it is being treated. Once our optometrists know the cause, they will give you a plain, specific answer on when it is safe to be back around other people, not a shrug and a guess.

Is the visit covered by insurance?

Pink eye is often medically billable, so it usually runs through your medical plan rather than your vision plan. We accept vision and medical insurance plans (see our Insurance page), and we are glad to help you check before you come in; call 239-500-2020 and we will walk through your plan with you. We treat pink eye right here in the office, and if something turns out to need a specialist, we will refer you and help coordinate that care rather than pretend it belongs here.

Get it looked at

If your eye is red, itchy, watering, or crusted shut, the fastest way in is a phone call. We will see you as soon as we can and have our optometrists examine the eye, pin down what it is, and start the right treatment.
