Seven Fall Activities to Pair With Cannabis, Responsibly

Seven autumn ideas for adults 21+, from cider-mill days to an infused fall bake, plus the ground rules that keep fall plans legal and safe.

Good fall cannabis activities pair a seasonal plan with a simple order of operations: do the active part first, then unwind at home. Here are seven ideas for adults 21 and older, from cider-mill afternoons to an infused fall bake, plus the ground rules that keep them legal and safe in Michigan. For product picks, see our fall cannabis products guide.

Ground rules for fall cannabis activities

  • Private spaces only. Michigan law doesn't allow consuming cannabis in public, and property owners or managers can forbid it on site. Your own home, or a friend's place where the host is on board, is the spot.
  • No driving. Michigan bans using cannabis while driving, and driving under its influence. Take the color drive sober, or let a sober friend take the wheel.
  • Start low. You might not notice an edible for up to two hours, so be patient before having more.
  • Skip the mix. Drinking while using cannabis is likely to stack the impairment beyond what either causes alone.

1. An orchard or cider-mill day: go sober, unwind back home

Picking apples, sipping cider and grabbing a warm donut is a fall classic in Michigan. Orchards and cider mills welcome the public, so leave cannabis at home and enjoy the day as it is. Once you're back, warm up some of that cider, put your feet up and let the evening be the relaxed part.

2. Pumpkin carving with friends: knives first, cannabis after

Carving takes sharp tools and steady hands, so do it sober. Scoop, carve and roast the seeds, put the knives away, then relax with your finished jack-o'-lanterns glowing on the porch. If friends are joining, agree on the order of the evening before anyone arrives.

3. A backyard afternoon in the leaves with a low-dose edible

Spread a blanket in your own backyard, rake a little (or don't) and enjoy the color overhead. A low-dose edible suits an unhurried afternoon, since it builds slowly and can last for hours. If you're new, begin with 2.5 mg or less and allow a full two hours to pass. For help finding your amount, see our THC dosage guide.

4. A fall movie marathon

Pick a theme: classic monsters, cozy small-town stories or one director's body of work. Set out blankets, water and snacks, and pace yourself across the marathon instead of front-loading. As for the cannabis, a low-dose edible eaten before the opening credits may not show up until the second film, so plan for that. An inhaled format is easier to pace between films, a little at a time. For more ideas, see our guide to movies to watch high.

5. An infused apple dish or fall bake

Fall baking and cannabutter go well together: apple crisp, pumpkin bars or spiced cookies. Make a batch of homemade cannabutter, or thaw one, and do the math first. If your butter holds about 40 mg of THC per tablespoon, using 2 tablespoons in a crisp that serves 8 works out to about 10 mg per serving at most. Use plain butter for the rest of the recipe and mix well. Then mark the dish as infused so nobody takes a piece by mistake, and keep it up high, away from children and pets.

6. The DIY apple pipe: novelty and safety notes

An apple pipe is a seasonal novelty: a firm apple with a small bowl carved in the top and a channel bored in from the side to meet it. If you try one:

  • Carve it sober, with a clean tool, before anyone consumes.
  • Keep the bowl small, and add a pipe screen if you have one so plant material doesn't get pulled through.
  • Use it once, then toss it. A cut apple browns and spoils quickly.
  • Remember it's still smoking, so the usual cautions about smoke apply.
  • Use it only at home or on other private property where that's allowed.

7. A fall terpene tasting at home

Terpenes are the aroma compounds behind each strain's scent, and several echo the season. Set out a few jars and compare by smell:

  • Beta-caryophyllene: peppery and spicy, like a well-stocked spice drawer
  • Myrcene: earthy and musky
  • Limonene: bright citrus, like orange peel
  • Pinene: fresh pine
  • Humulene: woody and hoppy

It's an easy way to learn what you like. Ask a budtender which products lead with these terpenes, or check your store's menu online and reserve a pickup order.

21+ only. Please consume responsibly.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a pipe out of an apple?

Yes. Carve a small bowl into the top of a firm apple, then bore a channel in from the side to meet it, which becomes the mouthpiece. Do the carving before anyone consumes, use a pipe screen if you have one, and toss the apple after one use. It's still smoking, so use it only at home or on private land where that's allowed.

What are good fall cannabis activities?

Pair a seasonal plan with a simple order of operations: active first, cannabis after. Visit an orchard sober and carve pumpkins before anyone consumes. Then settle in at home for a movie marathon, a backyard afternoon or an infused fall bake. A terpene tasting with peppery, earthy and citrus aromas is another cozy option for adults 21+.

Can you consume cannabis at a Michigan orchard or cider mill?

No. Orchards and cider mills are open to the public, and Michigan doesn't permit consuming cannabis in public places. Property owners can also forbid it on their land. Enjoy the cider and the hayride sober, and don't drive after consuming. Save cannabis for home, or a friend's private property where the host is fine with it.

What edibles suit fall?

Any edible can fit, but warm, spiced flavors feel right this time of year, from apple and cinnamon to pumpkin and chocolate. Homemade options like an infused apple crisp work too. Whatever you choose, read the serving size, start low and let two hours pass before having another.
