How Long Does THC Stay in Your System?

For a urine test, the usual range is 3 to 7 days after occasional use and 30 days or more with daily use. Saliva and blood clear much faster. Hair holds a record for roughly 90 days.

That spread is wide because clearance depends on how much THC your body has stored, how much body fat you carry, and how long it’s been since your last session. Those are the only variables that matter, and none of them respond to a drink.

Here’s what each test actually measures, what the realistic windows look like, and why the products sold to shorten them don’t.

Detection Windows by Test Type

TestOccasional useA few times a weekDaily use
Urine3 to 7 days10 to 15 days30 days or more
Saliva24 to 72 hoursUp to a weekUp to a week
Blood1 to 2 daysUp to a weekUp to a week
HairUp to 90 daysUp to 90 daysUp to 90 days

Treat every number here as a range rather than a deadline. Two people with identical habits can clear at noticeably different rates.

Urine testing is what you’ll most likely encounter. It’s cheap, well-validated, and the standard for pre-employment screening. It doesn’t detect THC itself but rather THC-COOH, a metabolite your liver produces, which is why the window extends well past any impairment.

Saliva testing is increasingly common for roadside and workplace spot checks. It reflects recent use, which makes it closer to a test of current impairment.

Blood testing has the shortest window and is mostly used in accident investigations and legal settings.

Hair testing covers about 90 days and is primarily used for pre-employment screening in safety-sensitive industries. It’s also the least sensitive to light use, since it needs enough exposure to deposit in the follicle.

What Actually Determines How Long It Takes

  • How much is stored: By far the biggest factor. THC is fat-soluble, so it accumulates in adipose tissue with repeated use and releases slowly. Someone who consumes daily has built a reserve that someone who had one edible at a party simply doesn’t have.
  • Body fat percentage: More fat tissue means more storage capacity and a slower release curve.
  • Metabolism: Individual variation here is real and largely outside your control.
  • Potency and quantity: Higher-THC products and larger amounts both increase the load your body has to clear.
  • Time: The only variable that reliably moves the needle.

Do Detox Drinks Work?

Not in the way they’re advertised.

Detox drinks and detox pills don’t remove THC metabolites from your body. Nothing taken orally does, because the THC isn’t circulating in fluid waiting to be rinsed out. It’s in fat tissue.

What these products actually do is dilute your urine. Most are a diuretic combined with creatine and B vitamins. The diuretic increases output, the creatine props up your creatinine reading so the sample doesn’t look watery, and the B vitamins restore the color that heavy fluid intake washes out.

The problem is that labs test for exactly this. Creatinine concentration, specific gravity, and pH are all measured, and a sample outside the expected range comes back reported as dilute or invalid. Many employers treat an invalid result the same as a positive result, and others require a retest, often an observed one.

They’re also entirely unregulated, so the contents vary from batch to batch with no oversight of what’s in the bottle or of the dose.

Home remedies are worse. Cranberry juice, lemon water, and niacin all get recommended constantly, none of them work, and niacin at the doses people take for this purpose can cause liver injury. We go through each of these claims in detail in Does Cranberry Juice Flush THC.

Will Delta-8 or Hemp Products Show Up?

Yes, and this catches people out regularly.

Standard drug tests use an immunoassay that detects THC metabolites. It cannot distinguish delta-8 THC from delta-9 THC. Both produce metabolites that the test reads as a positive result. The same is true of delta-10 and most other hemp-derived THC isomers.

So a product sold legally as hemp-derived, bought without any medical registration, will still fail a standard workplace test. The legal status of what you consumed has no bearing on what the assay detects.

Full-spectrum CBD carries the same risk. By definition, it contains trace THC, legally up to 0.3%, and with daily use those traces can accumulate to detectable levels. CBD isolate and broad-spectrum products are far less likely to trigger a positive, though mislabeling in the unregulated CBD market means it isn’t a guarantee.

If you’re subject to testing, the practical takeaway is that “hemp-derived” and “legal” don’t mean “won’t show up.”

Do Edibles Stay in Your System Longer?

Often, yes.

When you eat cannabis, your liver converts a portion of the THC into 11-hydroxy-THC before it reaches circulation. That metabolic route produces a different and generally larger metabolic load than inhaling the same nominal amount, which can extend detection somewhat.

The size of the difference depends far more on dose than on format. A 10mg gummy and a modest joint are broadly comparable. A 100mg edible is not.

We cover the timing side of edibles, onset through duration, in how long do edibles last.

What Actually Works

Time and abstinence. That’s the entire honest list.

If you know a test is coming, the only reliable approach is to stop consuming and give your body the window it needs, using the table above as a rough guide and allowing more margin than the minimum if you’re a frequent consumer.

Two things worth knowing:

  1. Exercise won’t speed it up and may briefly work against you. Burning fat can release stored THC back into circulation, so a hard workout shortly before a test is counterproductive.
  2. Don’t attempt adulteration. Labs screen for it, adulterated samples are typically treated as failures rather than negatives, and some of the substances people use are genuinely dangerous to handle or ingest.

If you’re in a safety-sensitive role or a legal situation where testing matters, the sensible move is an honest conversation about timing rather than a product that promises to solve it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does THC stay in your system?

For urine testing, roughly 3 to 7 days after occasional use, 10 to 15 days with use a few times a week, and 30 days or more with daily use. Saliva typically clears in 24 to 72 hours, blood in 1 to 2 days, and hair testing detects use for around 90 days.

How long does THC stay in urine?

Urine tests detect THC-COOH, a metabolite, rather than THC itself. Occasional users generally clear it in 3 to 7 days. Daily users can test positive for a month or longer because the metabolite accumulates in fat tissue and releases slowly.

Do detox drinks work?

Not as claimed. They don’t remove THC metabolites, because nothing taken orally can. They dilute urine and mask that dilution with creatinine and B vitamins, and labs test specifically for dilution using creatinine and specific gravity. A dilute sample is typically reported as invalid.

Will delta-8 show up on a drug test?

Yes. Standard immunoassay tests cannot distinguish delta-8 from delta-9 THC, so both register as positive. The same applies to delta-10 and other hemp-derived isomers, regardless of their legal status.

Will CBD make me fail a drug test?

Full-spectrum CBD contains trace THC and can accumulate to detectable levels with daily use. Isolate and broad-spectrum products are much less likely to cause a positive, though inconsistent labeling in the CBD market makes it uncertain.

Do edibles stay in your system longer than smoking?

Often somewhat longer, because the liver converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC before it enters circulation, producing a larger metabolic load. Dose matters far more than format, though.

Does body fat affect how long THC stays in your system?

Yes. THC is fat-soluble and stores in adipose tissue, so a higher body fat percentage generally means more storage capacity and slower clearance.

Can you speed up THC clearance?

Not meaningfully. Time and abstinence are the only reliable factors. Exercise can briefly raise circulating THC by mobilizing it from fat stores, and detox products dilute rather than remove.

Time Is the Only Variable That Moves

THC clears on its own schedule, set by how much is stored, how much body fat you carry, and how long you’ve waited. Urine testing gives you days at the low end and a month at the high end.

Everything sold to shorten that window works by diluting your sample, and labs test for dilution. The honest answer is unsatisfying, but knowing the real timeline is more useful than a bottle that promises to shortcut it.
